Terrains in Progress
« on: November 01, 2002, 11:42:53 AM »
Hey everyone,
Sorry I don't check in here more often, just alot going on. To give you an update on terrains in the works:

Midway:
Completed. Terrain Textures by Squirrel. Skins by Dux and Ramzey. :)

Greece:
10Bears just completed this and includes skins by Wotan, Samm, GTO4. If I got the names wrong, yell at 10Bears!!! ;)

Currently, I have two terrains in the works and one update.
The two in the works are just what if for something different.

Kanyon Terrain:
This is actually centered on the Owens Valley in California. I thought it looked really cool when I flew through it in MSFS 2K2, so I decided to build it for AH. You know, the Japanese invasion of the west coast? You don't remember that? :D  Anyway, it has lakebed runways and a desert valley (Owens Valley) which is ideal for GV battles and it has King's Canyon to the west, just over the ridge which is mostly forested, so hopefully it will be alot of fun. It will also have air racing pylons (The new RADAR tower object) set up near one of the airfields on the  east of the terrain in the desert for air racing.

As such, I was thinking early to midwar planes painted as they were in WW2, specifically, how they were painted when used for training in the brown/olive drab with big yellow sprayed on numbers for markings. I would like to see the Ki-61 in one of the chocolate brown paint schemes used on it by the IJA. Also, maybe a silver C-47/DC-3, to make it look an airliner pressed into military service on the West Coast.

As for the latewar planes, I would like to see them painted in Air Racing colors. The P-51D, Tempest, Spit Mk. XIV, and Dora. Perhaps paint the SBD in T-6 'Air racing colors' as well. :)

Panama:
Jordi requested a terrain for the Panama Canal, since that was a strategic item during the war and I was thinking pre-war paint schemes on the Allied aircraft, i.e. F4F-4's in the silver and chrome yellow paint schemes with the bright color markings. I would like to see the Bf-109E painted like an Bf-109T, since I would like this terrain to be a combination Japanese and German hardware on the Axis side Bf-109E(T), Ju-88, Val, A6M2, Kate and Allied hardware being F4F-4, P-40B, Boston III, SBD.

Black Sea Winter update:
Basically, this is getting a complete overhaul. I already have new ground textures from Squirrel on this and will need the entire gambut of skins from both the Russian and Luftwaffe sides.

Also, the point man on all of these skins is Dux. Let me find out from him what his priorites are in terms of the skins he has lined up for the Black Sea Winter terrain.

Finland/Leningrad
This is Camo's terrain he started work on before he went on Sabbatical. Hopefully he will have it completed soon :)

Hungary:
This is 10 Bears next project.

Po Valley
This is Weasel's current project.

Anything he wants in the pacific, Papau new Guinea/Okinawa
This is Raxx's next project(s). He loves doing Pacific work...lol.

Niemann
Tilt has been working on a Niemann terrain for some time now and it will make an excellent additon to the terrain library for Eastern Front battles.

However, Nuttz I knew at one time you were planning on making Pearl Harbor Have you begun work on this? Are you still planning to do so? I know many CM's who would like to see it, so please let us know if you are working on it, I am sure it would look awesome if you made it.

If you have any questions, comments, or just want to yell at me, you can post your replies here or e-mail me at sundog@flyaceshigh.com

Edit I added the info about what Camo is working on since I forgot to add it the first time. Sorry about that.

That is just an update on what the Aces High CM terrain team is working on. I haven't any doubt that many within the AH community are developing more terrains, as they regularly post here. I can only speak for those on the CM team, in which case I should have titled this thread CM terrains in progress ;). Thanks for pointing that out Wlfgng.

Perhaps everyone else wouldn't mind posting what they are working on here? I know the CM's are always looking for new terrains to fly events on and knowing what you guys are developing would help them plan future events.

some 'un' official ones I have in prog:

Mountain terrain (based loosely on the west slope of Colorado
Mountain terrain (Nepal area)
Grand Canyon (having probs with tiles still)
Desert (Africa based)

all are based on real DEM data but don't reflect actual conditions (I.E. exagerated elevation differences)

Hawaii (1-1)
(the only true scale/elevation set of the bunch)

yes I can finish Pearl harbor. I was waiting for the new TE. I have been experimenting with the new TE since it came out. WOW!!! theres alot of new ideas i have tried, some with great success some not.

I currently just finished tiles for a main area map. The tiles had to be perfect for the "changes" we can now do to the map. I posted the map awhile back.

My only question with the pearl harbor map is....

do you want one island on a 512 mile map or 4 identical islands on the map?, this way the allied don't know what island is being attacked. This may help keep the element of surprise for the Axis.

Just answer that question and I'll start putting the peices together.

Nuttz,
I would make it a 512x512 terrain. If you broke it up into 4 quadrants like
1-2
3-4
I would place Oahu at the midpoint of the line segment separating the 2 and 4 quadrants. That would leave alot of ocean for the IJN to attack from. But go with whatever you think is best.

Good luck on the MA terrain as well, as that has to be ALOT of work. :)
