Who reads "Aviation History" magazine?
« on: November 06, 2002, 08:25:35 PM »
It's the only magazine that I subscribe to.  I love it and look forward to every issue.  I've always wondered if this would be a good place for HTC to advertise.  They have a flight sim review section, and have reviewed every sim that I've heard of except Aces High... I wonder why?
(I just got the latest issue today.)

Anyway, sound off if you do or don't read or subscribe to Aviation History magazine.

I buy it from time to time. I love the anecdotal WWII stories, but being a Kiwi, I find the content can be a bit Pro-US "Jingoistic" in tone.

Yeah, I read that Online Flight Sim discussion at the back this month too, they reviewed BF1942 and WW2OL, then mentioned IL-2 at the end as a more 'traditional' Flight Sim.  Do they have their heads up their arses or what?  Why wouldn't they even give AH a mention?  Because they receive no advertising dollars from HTC?  Because there is no 'boxed' version on the market?  Whatever the reason, it's pretty lame when they don't mention the best WW2 Flight Sim online.  Really frosts my oats when I see these glorious right-ups on CFS or WB, boy are they steering people down the wrong path!

"Why wouldn't they even give AH a mention? Because they receive no advertising dollars from HTC?"

You would be as suprised as I was when I fully discovered how much 'content' in magazines is driven by advertising budgets.

Articles on other sims besides AH isn't based on HTC's lack of money given by HTC to the magazine... it's the other way around. Articles written about those other sims are the result of those other sims giving the magazines money in one form or another.

Essentially, a great portion of the articles you read in any magazine are actually ads dressed up to look like content.

I canceled my subscription when it started including a large insert for some other magazine that I wasn't interested in.  Now I only get FlyPast, a very good and very expensive magazine from the UK.

A long, long time ago in a job far, far away a professor (I was working at a University) said he wated to buy a new computer and asked for advice.  He had read the reviews in ReallyBigComputerMagazine(tm), and wanted my opinion.  I asked him who advertized in the big gatefold behind the front cover, the slightly smaller gatefold in the middle, and on the  gatefold in the back.  Sure enough, rated No. 1, 2, and 3, in the order of size of their advertisement.

His jaw dropped.  I thought everyone knew how magazine reviews worked.
