At 105 years old, Harvel C. Edwards is one of only 347 WWI veterans left worldwide. On the 80th anniversary of the Armistice, when he was 101, Edwards was presented the French Legion of Honor by Jean-Paul Monchau, Consul General of France. He was the first Tennessee WWI veteran to receive the honor. One of 2 million Americans who fought in World War I. Some 116,000 American soldiers died on French soil, and more than 14,000 are buried at the Meuse-Argonnne American cemetery.
