What I think Aces High needs (features wise)
« on: February 19, 2001, 10:22:00 AM »
Hey everyone,

I've only been playing AH for about 2 months now, but I think I've been playing long enough to understand what new features might make Aces High a better sim. Comment if you like.

First of all, more targets to bomb! Sure there is the HQ and city to bomb, but other than that, there is really nothing else other than the standard air field. Why not add strategic bridges, rail roads, ammo dumps...?

That brings up my next wish, supply lines! Its pretty basic stuff with the city and HQ affecting the enemy country. Supply lines (which ties directly into bridges, rail roads, and ammo dumps) could affect the country on a more local scale.

More aircraft.

Weather! Okay, the clouds look great, but I think wind and weather would make a more interesting arena. Not everyone will agree with me on this one though I'm sure.

Enhanced ground textures and air craft explosions. In my opinion, the ground textures look like something out of Super Mario Brothers. They're bright primary colors, and somehow, they reflect the sunlight.   A 'dirtier' ground with more variations in the textures (need grass for the sheep!) would look nicer. Explosions are just plain (plane?)ugly! I know that they're less processor intensive, but even the people on extremely low end computers wouldn't mind their framerate plummeting for a second if it meant a beautiful ego-boosting explosion. On the subject of explosions, debrisless explosions just look wrong. After an explosion, it would be nice to see the wings/fusalage/stabliser plumet to the earth in separate dirctions.

And finally. Damage decals on aircraft! Some damage is visable (like when you're missing a wing), but it would be soooo much better if you could see the holes in your wings or cockpit glass when you take damage.

What do you think?

Servo I think a lot of this is limited to the base line connection speed the game is designed for. I assume it's set up for 28.8K connection. If they bumped to up to even 56K you could have a lot more going on. Could you imagine if the minimum connection speeds were in the DSL range. Or how about a T1 based game.   I think we will see more in the future but for now they are limited by the connection speed of the average player. Can anyone comment on that aspect that has more background please. I'd like to know.

Almost all of your ideas are widely accepted as welcome improvements. We are just waiting on HTC to find the resources and methodology to impliment them.

As far as any graphics improvements go... that's a touchy subject that I'll not get too involved in.  Suffice to say, If I had my druthers I'd rather see more potential targets and aircraft than more eye candy.  When you are dealing with such a small company, you have to acknowledge that certain things need to be prioritized.

Excellent post Servo.  Thanks for contributing and welcome aboard.

I understand the why graphics improvements are a touchy subject, and I appreciate the game being based around a 28.8k connection. For the last 8 weeks, nearly all my time in Aces High, I was on vacation in Australia. To my surprise, even being half a world away, the game was still wonderfully playable. Now that I'm home back on a cable connection, the only major difference I notice in the arena is that I die a whole lot more in mid-air collisions. Oh, and gunnery is more rewarding (since the pieces break off sooner than they used to).
