Things to try against the marketing assault
« on: November 15, 2002, 02:34:19 PM »
1. When the telemarketer calls, don't hang up the phone on them. Ask if they can hold for a moment. Then, place the phone down and walk away. When you hear it beeping, hang it up. Consider it a public service. While they are waiting for you, they aren't bugging anyone else.

2. When you get those pre approved letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and junk like that, most of them come with postage paid return envelopes. Get rid of some of your other junk mail by putting it in these envelopes. Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send the pizza coupon to Citibank. Or... just send the application back and leave everything blank.

I like #2, I may have to start trying that.  The Post Office only charges them for the pre-paid return envelopes if they are used, right? :D

You remember the weasel from the Budweiser commercials?  Whenever a telemarketer calls our house, The Woman starts talking like the weasel and they hang up right away.

Only one problem with number one there Sando...if they state, "Do not reply if you want to switch to our long distance service."
You are hosed.

Isn't that a good way to find themselves in court?

I do believe that if you call your local service provider and ask them to put a pic freeze on your long distance service the only way it can be changed is if you directly call your service provider and change it by giving your consent,  keeps you from being slammed.   We set this up for all our customers,  about 20,000 of them.

Oh, and Sandman,  I use #2 but with a twist.   My 5 year old daughter likes to draw pictures,  so she draws the pictures and I stuff them in the envelops and then mail them back.

Give them something to hang on their walls.
