On November 10, 2002, at 1330 eastern standard time, a Chance Vought F4U-4 experimental airplane, N713JT, registered to and operated by the pilot, collided with trees and caught fire following a loss of engine power in Columbia, South Carolina. The flight was operated under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91 with no flight plan filed. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The commercial pilot received fatal injuries, and the airplane was destroyed. The local flight departed Columbia Owens Downtown Airport in Columbia, South Carolina, at 1325.
The pilot was participating in a level formation flight when witnesses observed smoke trailing from the airplane. The airplane was observed in a descent, and it collided with trees and caught fire about 3/4 mile from Columbia Owens Downtown Airport in Columbia, South Carolina.
