Legacy CH Products and JS mapping
« on: November 10, 2002, 07:46:16 PM »
After a 4 year haitus (AW), I started flying again.

I have legacy CH products which include Force FX, Pro Throttle and Pro Rudder.   I found that Speedkeys no longer functions with Windows XP.

I'm trying to find a work around and wondered if anyone else had solved the problem.   I get partial views on two of the hats, but I'm missing left, back and back up.

I tried running speed keys from the C: prompt, but no go.

I'm considering purchasing a gameport to USB adaptor from Radio Shack and seeing how I do with that.

I tried remapping the JS, but this is new to me.  No success so far, but I haven't given up.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Want to say hello to all the old Damned and other folks I haven't seen for years.

Specter 4462,

Flying as Meshak.

I've used a USB adaptor with a CH Fighterstick but I wouldn't expect it to work with an FX stick. Also I think there aren't any FX drivers for XP and a USB adaptor won't solve the programming problem. Once the throttle is programmed it will work with XP but XP doesn't allow writing to the KB port. Some users set up dual boot with an OS that allows CH Speedkeys to work.  You might do best to dual boot and play AH with an OS that supports FX and Speedkeys.

I have a Ch FX Stick, Pro Throttle and Pro pedals, they all work in AH including the force feedback with the last of the series of FX Immersion drivers.  (10 button 3 axis driver -you need the original FX dll from the FX install floppies plus the downloadable Force drivers from CH)  The only issue is to set the trim force very low.
I usually program the stick itself with AH's own keymapping, and use Stickworks CTFJ vxd to limit excessive rudder movement and nose bounce. However this will only work running Win98 or 98SE.

If you have Win XP OS only you cannot program the throttle with Speedkeys as it is not compatible with XP and CH are no longer supporting it or re-writing for XP, so the only solution is to set up a dual boot system with win98SE to program it if you only have one PC to use.

Once programmed it will work in XP, or for best compatabilty just use win98SE to play.  Unfortunately you need to start from scratch with win98SE to set up a dual boot system with both OS installed.

Thanks FLS and Spiffy.

I dropped 30 bucks in an attempt to circumvent the MS keyboard security by purchasing a Radio Shack gameport to USB connector and a keyboard to USB connector.  I hooked the Pro throttle into the USB adaptor, the rudders into the Throttle and the FX stick into the rudders.

The rudders and stick were recognized and drivers were loaded, but AH wouldn't recognize the Pro Throttle.  CH USB software didn't appear to be able to map the devices.   My throttle Z axis made the hat view jump around.

Gave it a good college try, but looks like I'll be replacing legacy stuff one piece at a time.

I got a cheap kill versus a formation of buffs Sunday, but (doh!) collisions are modeled ;)

I made it within 3 miles of base after shooting one down, thinking I would ditch when the engines quit....what are those dots on that relatively flat ground?

Palm trees :)

I ordered a CH Fighterstick USB.   I have a couple of questions.

I'll still be using pro throttle and rudders - gameport.

In order to get the rudders and throttle to work as they currently do (several buttons and one hat works on the throttle)

Do I just leave them connected and ....leave the FX stick in the XP set up?

I know XP will pick up on the USB stick and I've already loaded the CH software for it.

Thanks

AH will recognise more than one stick, but I'm not sure if it will work in XP.

CH products gameport products will not work with windows XP. XP will not allow key mapping from the speed keys program. The new program for XP on CH websight will not work with gameport style sticks.  USB adapter will allow your game port stick to work BUT you will not be able to load keymapping IE the joystick buttons will not work including the hat switches. I know cause I went thu this exact thing couple months ago when I upgraded to XP. One thing I did find tho after I loaded XP my gameport stick worked fine all the keymapping was still there. How ever when I tried to change the map zap it no longer worked. If you know how to do it one way you may work around this is a duel boot system. Have win98 2000 loaded on a particion load up speed keys down load the map into the stick the reboot to XP or just play the game in win98 mode. How ever this will not work using the win98 compatabilty mode tru XP. You have to setup a duel boot. I did not try it this way cause I dont know how. I just went out and bought all new CH USB stuff. You can use your gameport throttle with usb stick how ever the buttons on throttle will not work. The new usb stuff is the toejam man its the best flying stick I have ever had twice as good as the CH gameport. Its stable with 0 spiking . Oner very nice thing about the USB stuff is you can setup duel throttles in AH by using the throttle wheel as one and the throttle as the other. You can do some amazing stuff in p38s with it setup like that.  In short whip out that old credit card and jump up and down on it and buy the new stuff. You bank account might regret it but you wont. If you need any further help with the USB setup you can email me at ice_nine_one@yahoo.com
Ill be more than happy to help.

I hear your pain!  I am going to have to break down and replace all my old CH stuff :(

Hmmm I wonder if they have a trade in program.... ;)   most likely not knowing my luck.

If you come up with anything I'll keep peeking at this post every so often.
