The only thing weird with the 38 that I recall, is the tendency to snap roll during an accelerated stall. It's much like the F6F in that respect, you pull to hard it will normally make a complete 180 before the plane recovers from relieved back pressure.
The velocity at which is snap roll is pretty incredible, even at very low speeds, considering the mass and span of the P-38.
I had always heard the F6F and P-38 generally just mushed out unless you were really horsing the plane around or continued to apply back pressure throughout an accelerated stall.
