i happened to come into the possession of a history book that was written in england in the year 1763! it's the coolest thing i own, in amazingly good condition, and i thought i would share some of the great passages from the book - it is called "annual register" and it covers everything you can imagine - it talks about the colonies, crazy remedies that all seem to give you the runs or make you retch.....

i'll try to list more later when i'm less lazy - there's even an old map of the mediterranean still in good shape at the back of the book. here's a few gems:

LIQUID SWEAT

Take a gallon of good spirits of wine, and half a gallon of good white wine. Put them into a strong bottle and add half a pound of good saffron, four ounces of good cinnamon, two ounces of salt of tartar, and one ounce of good opium cut into small bits. Stop the bottle close, and set it within the air of the fire eight days, shaking it three or four times a day. Filter it through filtering paper. the dose is from 30-50 drops, in a glass of good white wine.

SEPTEMBER 2nd

Was seen throughout the whole kingdom of Sweden a globe of fire, with a long bright tail like a comet, which soon disappeared.

SEPTEMBER 6th

Four disorderly women being sent to Bridewell, a parcel of sailors assembled in Rosemary Lane, with an intent to rescue them; upon which a file of musketeers was sent for them from the tower, and the sailors continuing, obstinate in their purpose, the soldiers fired, when four were killed on the spot, and many mortally wounded, who died in a few days in the hospital.

By the KING A PROCLAMATION. GEORGE, R.

Whereas we have taken into our royal consideration the extensive and valuable acquisitions in America, secured to our crown by the late definitive treaty of peace concluded at Paris the 10th day of February last and being desirous that all our loving subjects, as well of our kingdoms as of our colonies in America may avail themselves, with all convenient speed…….four distinct and separate governments , stiled and called by the names Quebec, East Florida, West Florida and Grenada…

Very cool.

I collect old books for fun, but I have nothing that old.

My favorites are an almost complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica dated 1893 and one called  "Colliers Photographic History of the European War" dated 1915. Very interesting to read how Colliers was pretty neutral at the time of the books publishing (The "European War" in the title is WW1 BTW).

I also have a 1911 Atlas that includes a demographic map of the distribution of "Colored People" in the USA.

1808 was my oldest before this - i've been hitting estate sales lately. every now and then some rich coot up the hill dies and his kids throw the estate up for us riff raff to pick through and haggle over. i always go straight for the library.

i posted a picture of the map, there's some other stuff i found too here ranging through 1912 i think, the pix are really big so it might load slow but it's detailed.

big-assed pictures

Thanks Rod, but as I just moved into my new home, I haven't even finished unpacking the books I already own. Momma would kill me if I were to expand the library at this point in time. :)

I will remember the offer however and get back to ya after we are settled.
