Improving Framerate
« on: November 11, 2002, 09:23:15 AM »
Hi,

I didnt think I would have any problems with Aces High, and typically my FR hangs around 60 - 70 in the air.  But occasionally I get hesitation particularly when rolling, and I am wondering if it is something I can correct with my existing hardware.

Pent4 1.6a Northwood @2.24g,  512 Mushkin HiPerf RAM, Asus V7700 64m RAM. This is on an Asus P4b266 Motherboard.

Thank you,

This has nothing to do with your post except to say, wow.  Nice box.  Heck of a job OC'ing it too...haven't seen too many p4 1.6 breech the 2 gig barrier...especially hitting 2.24.  WTG.

Just an evil guess :p

The overheat throtteling feature of the P4 causes those short pauses. Switch it back to 1.6 GHz, I don't think that will reduce frame rate.

Thanks for the compliments, actually the 1.6a hits that easily with the right prep.  Check out AnandTech for some additional information.

Temps are very stable, I would be surprised if the chip is struggling at all.  Case temps are controlled via 7 thermal probes mounted in the case, while CPU temp never exceeds 40C.  Even when I abuse it with Sandra.  Now that said, you never know, and I certainly appreciate the comments and thoughts.

I am inclined to believe it's in the graphics card, which I haven't tried to overclock yet.  Its running at 50C, which sort of worries me.  The weird part is that the problem is not consistent.  For example I can relog and it goes away.  Or I can be in an intense furball without any problems, but over the ocean I do an aileron roll and it will hesitate.

It may have to do with my connection and LAN.  I have two servers online as well, and they feed out through my hub and cable router.  Just for grins I'll attach a pic of those :)

Smash nice box!

But bit of advice.  I know it sounds cool to overclock.  And monitoring temps are a must.  But overclocking anything, even though it is cooled well will shorten its' useful lifespan, no matter how well it is cooled.

Just built new box myself

256 DDR pc2100...can use 2700  (Micron)
Geforce4Ti4600
SoundBlaster Live 5.1
Windows98SE OPS
Klipsch 5.1 speakers

Oh, and framerate usually in the mid 80s', matching monitors refresh rate mostly at 1280 X 1024 32 bit

And a whole buncha pissed off neigbors from the sound

Shane.....go to BZBOYZ.com...look at motherboard and cpu combos, you'll be really suprised how little you'd have to spend to upgrade your pc.

Yes, hardware upgrades are certainly cheap at this point.  Regarding the reduction of component life due to overclocking, you are certainly correct.  However, going from 10 years to 5 years doesn't really matter that much to me.  Really though, the key is getting a good chip that doesn't require a big bump in the core voltage.  There is quite a bit of research regarding the Northwood chip available on AnandTech.

I began overclocking when I built my first Warbirds rig, and that was a 300a Celery running at 450.  It ran as a workstation for more than a year, and then as a server 24/7 for another couple of years.  I finally had to retire it in favor of the servers you see above.  I've built several OC'd rigs, and have never had a component failure (knock on wood).  Though I've made a few other painful mistakes

AnandTech will provide some other great info on hardware, and I trust the reviews there better than anywhere else.  If you are curious about modifying the case similar to what I did (cold cathode etc) you can check out Pimp Rig, http://www.pimprig.com, there are other sites too.

Don't blame me if you develop a hardware addiction though
