I need a new Mic
« on: November 25, 2002, 09:50:12 PM »
I know this is the wrong forum, but I figure that more of you would read and answer this here.

I need to get a new mic and want to know what you think is best.  I want one that has earphones so that the wife doesn't have to listen to the FDB's belching and worse while I fly.

Which one should I get?

You can get a labtec stereo computer headset for something like $20, at any major computer store.  Long cord, decent sound(for the price anyways), and they're comfortable to wear.

Best mic is a Shure SM57...You'll have to change your setup a bit though...In place of your computer, you'll need a Gibson SG(with P90's),and in place of your monitor you'll have to plug into a Marshall Plexi twin stack...Place SM57 3 inches off-centre and at a 45 deg angle to one of the speakers..Press "Record" and I can guarantee that Shure won't let you down.

Labtec Axis 502 headset is the chit! Had mine for over a year and it's better then anything else I've used. Volume control and mic switch are right on the wire so no fumbling with sliders. Just park everything around 80% and leave it. Only runs 25 bucks too!

I find that most of the headsets have really crappy headphones.  You can get a pair of high quality headphones for the same price, and get a separate mic for about $20.  And you can use the mic with speakers if you want.  I use a Labtec collar mic that goes around my neck and puts the mic right in front of my mouth.  It's called LVA7370, not sure if they still make them.  Sennheiser makes a very similar unit.

About a year and half ago I bought a Plantronics Headset with Mic for 19.99 at our local Walmart Store. About 6 months after buying them I was goofing around and accidently pulled the wire partway out of the headset, but I taped it up and it kept going. Last week, 1.3 years after buying them, my Plantronics headset died. :(  About an hour before I posted this I had just gotten back from Circut City after buying another Plantronics Headset for 20 bucks.

If you can find them I highly reccommend getting a Plantronics Headset. They're the best I have ever owned.

I now use the same deal Ripsnort has.  I used to use the collar mike like Funked, which also worked nice, except I broke the extension cable for it, and it's retardedly hard to find a replacement 12ft m-m cable for it.
