What the... ?
« Reply #15 on: November 29, 2002, 06:31:32 PM »
I'll admit that im not a big spider fan, but i have heard this spider eating thing many, many times.  It doesnt really bother me.

It is not like I am actively involved in the eating process. If a spider decides that a cool place to camp out is inside my mouth and I end up eating it, it is really the spider's loss. (I like to think that spiders and animals have a grasp on concepts of things like "cool, lame, uber, relaxing, getting wasted, boring, and 'Christmas is only 4 more sleeps away' ")

Besides here are some of the other things that we eat that are far worse than eating a spider:

-Eggs (mmm fetus.)
-Oysters (actually most seafood, fish not included,  is really gross when you think about it.)
-Mushrooms (all of which are poisonous, some just slightly less so.)
-Cheese (in all of its forms, especially cottage or blue.)
-Milk (that is really sick)
-Vegetables grown with "organic fertilizer" (that is right, eating something that eats poop.)
-Hotdogs (blood plasma anyone?)
-Jello (if you dont already know, you dont want to.)
-Canola oil (refine it a bit further and your car will run on it.)
-and the grossest and most disgusting thing ever for ladies: Birth Contol Pills.  (These things are made from the most disgusting things on earth. Two ingredients of which are antlers and mare urine.) And they have to take them every day!!!!

So here are ten things that most if not all people have in their house and eat on a weekly if not day to day basis. (No, i dont take birth control pills.)

Not to mention the elite or cultural foods such as:

Cow tongues
Cow testicles
Pork horks
Dogs (poop eaters)
Cats
Head cheese
Aborted human fetuses
Tiger noodlees
Bear gall bladders
Rabbits (they eat poop too)
Spam
Chicken necks
Chicken or Beef Liver (a personal favourite of mine. But the idea of eating the most polluted organ in the body is not a nice one to dwell on.)
McDonalds

Anyone for a plate of spiders?

Had enough of these when I was a kid, grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia before air conditionning was invented... too many bugs to my taste.

I didn't need to know I'm eating spiders during sleep, I think I'll have to cauterize my mouth now :/

Still dreaming aboot moving to Canada or Alaska :)

Head cheese...who the hell eats this stuff?  Other than my wife, that is...

When we were dating she went to the St. Lawrence market in Toronto with my roomate and his girlfriend.  The "wife" decided she was going to make me a nice sandwhich for lunch when I got home from the office.  My roomate suggested getting some head cheese, knowing full well my thoughts on the subject...he had been with me on many occassions when I questioned why anyone would want to eat that nasty stuff.

He said the look on my face when I bit into my pre-made sandwhich was priceless.

Just read the link and i have to make an addition.

Where i live there are grainfields everywhere.  And if you go out early in the morning when the sun is just coming up and look at such a field, it is spectacular.  The dew collects and the spider webs appear as a shimmering silver blanket between the tips of the plants.

But once the dew evaporates and the wheat stalks sway in the slightest breeze, the webs fall apart.

As gross as spiders are (i think it is the mechanical way that they move that does it for me, it is just too weird) they are really amazing creatures.  I have had a few opportunities and enough patience to watch a spider make part of an insane web in my life, and it is really quite the experience. The time lapse movies really dont do the process justice.

The strange thing is if you watch them, their building practices have no apparent forethought or design plan, and the web isnt constructed in a sensical manner, but it works and looks beautiful.

Not really a big fan of the wolf or trap door spiders techniques though (N1k H.O dweebs.)

"Some people have said, 'oh yes, well it's a trampoline for aliens,'" Thair joked. "Or maybe it was an effort collectively by these spiders to try and catch a sheep"

NOOOO NOT THE SHEEEP!

Oh man, Im glad I live in a snow-dominated country. As I said, we dont get that many spiders here.

FWIW I live in snow country myself.

The same show (plus a few others) have also said that we humans are rarely, if ever, farther away from a spider than 3'.
even while flying.

I dunno 'bout you but I just bought 100 cans of spider spray for my crew chief to use..

I have a friend (a girl) that is really...I mean REALLY (no make that really) afraid of spiders. I mean it is so bad that she wont enter a room if someone has seen a spider in there (and Im talking the Swedish kind here, the 5mm variants). If she should actually happen to see a spider the normal reaction is a scream at the top of her lungs followed by a mad panic rush in the other direction accompanied by cries of "kill it kill it". I have seen her do that many times, and its funny as he**.

Now, if she would find out that there always is a spider within one meter from here, she would totally...TOTALLY freak. I think she would probably be hospitalized or something.

Is it true? I mean, even if it is true, I would never tell her that, but I got curious.
