Will Players ultimately be Terrain/Feature editors ?
« on: July 27, 1999, 01:47:00 AM »
This question has floated around just about any gaming conversation ive ever had.

Alot of first person games allow Players to CREATE there own "MAPS". Thus placing that MAP on a IP Address and If ya wanna play there...then ya have to download it.

Obviously...with only one arena...this is silly.

However...If there was a Editor...available to the players...where they could Edit there own MAPS...or Parts of MAPS.. (Except Fields obviously since they contain game functioning objects)  and then submit it to be reviewed by IMOL. Then Placed...in bits and parts...or Featured in SL's...or however.

And (im an idiot...so this may not make sense) Players could utilize it to create there own MAPS for Off line play.

Just a thought....

Thank of the Saved LAbor Costs!

Ive found about 5 relevant Issues on this Board so far concerning things that just such an editor could address....and save HiTech Inc. alot of time and money...they may end up doing the artwork themselves...but we can pound out some kewl stuff and neat ideas in the meantime for them to revue.

Just a thought.

It would certainly add long legs to the simm. My understanding is that it is quite an undertaking.

This reminds me of my wife, she always comes to my business and tells me we should buy this or that and put it here or there. My reply is always "how much money will this purchase make me". The usual answer in zero hehehehehe.

However in this case, I would go so far as to say that a terrain editor would double their revenues (assuming an hourly rate charge) and would be more than worth the effort (IE $$$$$$$$).

And if the game has possibility of squadrons, maybe personalized paint schemes for each squadron?

The squad CO could provide the AH people with the preferred schemes for the planes they want to fly, and if accepted, they would be put into the game for all to see.

It would be a real moneymaker

Rather than each AH squadron choosing its own custom markings, I'd much rather settle for some standard markings (say 3 or 4) to choose from for each a/c.  For example, a Spit with the choice of British/US, same for the P51, Bf109s with Eastern and Western front choices etc.

Actually a terrain editor would cost AH relatively nothing.

All they would have to do is release the terrain file formats, and I would bet money that within a couple of weeks the community would have written a nice graphically based terrain editor for them.

This community has quite a few skilled programmer types, and they enjoy working on projects such as this.

That was No. 1/401 RCAF Rams. The only fully

Don't spam the board please.

Aces High already has a terrain editor built into the game.  This editor allows you to make new terrains, place objects, and set object attributes.  Player created terrains can only be used offline, but terrains submitted to us can be made available for online play.

Forgot to mention.  Even though the editor uses the game engine, it is still a separate download from the game.  The editor will be available for general download.

Hey carrot we'll be able to set up a terrain for Battle of The Ditch

Can I leave it with you to take plenty of reconnaissance photos when you're on finals here and in Oz instead of having your trolley in an upright position?

Come on glars!!
The trolley may be in an upright position, but you know I wont be.
Where do you think that excess alcohol on board goes?

This is starting to sound better all the time
I would gladly get a hold of some topographical maps of Germany and start some serious terrain settings.
Thanks guys for the serious work on this project of yours and for listening to future player inputs.

This feature alone with bring out the artistic ability in us all..
