Considering an upgrade...
« on: December 01, 2002, 06:32:57 PM »
...and I'm too lazy to do the research myself.  :)

Upgrading from a PIII, 1ghz, 512MB.  I'll be going with an Intel P4 CPU, and I'd like to go with Asus for the motherboard (tho', I would consider Abit too).  I'm not interested in going AMD, regardless of what the arguments in favor of AMD are.  Price is an issue, but I'm willing to pay more to go Intel.

Here's what I plan on moving over from my current system:
-Asus GeForce 3 Deluxe
-ATI Rage Pro PCI
-Adaptec SCSI Adapter
-SB Live! Value
-Assorted drives and stuff

So, with the field narrowed down a bit, here's my questions:

I want to go socket 478, correct?
Should I go with 512k Cache?
What FSB?
DDR or Rambus?
Any other considerations I need to think about?

Thanks!

(edited because it was irrelevant to my post.)

Well SOB you could always go find an old Cyrix processor or Winchip from about 3-4 years ago and step really far backwards if price is an issue. :D

Seriously think long and hard about your next upgrade after this one since you are going Intel. I remember that the last few major chip releases they have put out have used different pin configurations and thus they force you into a new/different motherboard. Fortunately it looks like you wait about as long as I do for a chip/mobo upgrade so that may not be the real issue. I could not help but take a small dig at you for the price issue. I personally am going to wait for the 3GHz price wars to stop sometime next summer/fall unless something bad happens to the system before I buy a new chip/mobo.

Heh, I'm afriad if I wait too long, I won't have the money to upgrade.  Also, since Winter is upon us, it may be nice to have a Cyrix chip in the apartment!  :)

PS...Furious, read that article and summarize it for me.  Have it on my desk (the one near Creamo's, covered in porn and pizza boxes) by tomorrow afternoon.

SOB, I would encourage investing in a new video card first.  Even your current system is being bottlenecked by that video card.

After refering to the Sharkey Extreme website;
  Monthly High-end Gaming System  Buyer's Guide November 20, 2002

here's what I ordered last week;

Asus P4PE/L 845PE P4 (533FSB) Skt478 DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, LAN

Asus V8420 GeForce4 Ti4200 AGP 4X 128MB DDR Video Card w/TV-Out & DVI

Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB PC3200 400Mhz 64Mx64 184 DIMM Cas2 Memory w/Heat Spreader

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor (Northwood) 2.53GHz, 533MHz FSB, Socket 478

Also I've "asked" the wifeypoo to get the Western Digital 120GB Ultra DMA/100 Hard drive (w/ 8mb buffer, 7200RPM and 8-9ms seek time) as my XMAS present.

I like the ASUS P4PE motherboard's feature of Adjustable FSB/DDR ratio. Fixed AGP/PCI freqencies. so that I should be able to overclock the CPU FSB without getting graphic glitches due to maxed out AGP FSB.
