Just got a 1/48 Do 335 scale model. I must admit, it is the coolest looking LW plane, in an ugly sort of way

.
Well, when compared to 109 and 190, it is huge, almost twice as big. It looks very sleek and aerodynamic, except one thing : huge and thick wings.
The Do 335 concept was based on introducing second engine, but without the drag penalty. The plane speed seems to justify that, it was very fast.
Now, what are the advantages of a thick (and large area) wing ?
The wing has a rather sharp leading edge though.
In my understanding, it doesn't help the plane to be fast, but rather aid low speed maneuverability, right ? I've read on few places that Do 335 maneuverability was better than expected.
