Fighter Ace 3.5
« on: December 09, 2002, 01:44:59 AM »
Just renewed an old sub to check out the new version. Aces High still the better product. Some neat features in it though, paratroopers now, they land and are armed with machine guns and attack the scene, they can capture it also. You can man the gunner positions in bomber now too. But the territorial combat is loaded with bugs making field captures tough. The flight model is  arcadish....still. The graphics are good.....too good, need a very good system for this IMO. The sounds are awesome too. But with no terrain editor and the lack of settings for the host, how can it even compare with Aces High? Not to mention the flight model. Some people say Aces High is arcadish, go fly FA3.5 and you will learn what arcade really is. Alot of the people I flew FA with can't/won't fly AH because the flight model is too hard........seriously.

P.S.

How is the damage model in the new version? I've been playing IL2 online to get my fix and if its anything like IL2's, I'll definitely give it a shot.

I don't care much for an arcade flight model, but if the pros outnumber the cons, I might put up with it.

Don't get your hopes up EvilDingo. FA has never been known to have anything remotely like a damage model. In the last few months I have tried FA offline and online at the request of a good friend and the dm is still alot like what it used to be. Hit a guy on the left wing and his right wing shows the damage and on and on.

That is still one thing they have not bothered to even look at from the last time I played FA a good deal of the time in either version 2, 2.5, 3.0 beta and release.

FA 3.5 has some nice features like cannons overheating with prolonged bursts and also the requirement of oxygen over a certain altitude, it also has nice eye candy but Aces High still remains the most 'complete' online sim of the current crop.

Does it show the damage on the aircraft visibly? The last time I played, it would spam your screen with what was hit and damaged, but you could still fly the plane provided your total damage wasn't at 100% -- which was WAYY too simple a damage model for me.

It still has me interested... even if slightly. I now have a monster of a computer and throwing a flight sim at it where it uses my new found power would be excellent.

Ironically, I learned about Aces High while playing a FA. :)

Yes it still throws that lame bellybutton damage message across your view. Yes it still has to accumulate damage to 100% but if you loose 100% of your rudder you will have lost something like 20% overall damage. Many former FA players are here in AH now and the overwhelming majority of those are players that never once stepped off into the "full realism" of FA. At least that is my view of it.
