AdAware, all the way.  It is great for removing existing stuff.

If you don't have one already, get a firewall for your desktop.  I suggest Norton Internet Security (disclaimer, I'm in charge of QA for it) but Zone Alarm is also good.  Stay away from programs like Black Ice Defender (which isn't actually a firewall, it's an IDS) unless you use it in conjunction with a firewall that doesn't have an IDS and make sure you've got good anti-virus that gets new definitions often.

If my PC starts making noises when I am doing nothing, does that mean I am being hacked into or probed for info?..This happens frequently while I'm flying AH..My framerate tanks,I quit AH and listen to my PC make all sorts of noises, sorta like when it starts up...I close all prgs running using ENDITALL and still sounds very busy...Any suggestions?

Depends on your operating system.

One thing you might try is setting your swap file to be static (going into the system properties and making it the same minimum and maximum size) and that might take care of some of the disk activity that happens when there isn't a program other then Explorer or Systray running.
