One Cable modem account - 2 PCs to connect to it - what should I do?

Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated. :)

Blank - this releasing and renewing the IP. I never had to do that with just one machine hooked to Blueyonder. Do you have to do it often with the router? Telewest use dynamic IPs - as people in this thread have stated, they are not always very dynamic (depending on the isp). Does the IP change often, and therefore you have to reinitialise the router to work?

Cheers.

Dynamic or static IP will be irrelevant.  Of greater importance is the fact that you will both be sharing bandwidth.  You may get warps.  The other day I was having problems and remembered I had a workstation downloading MP3s at the same time I was playing.

There are 4 sometimes 5 PCs in our home that run through a Netgear RT311, but in the future I would go Linksys.  You get better NAT options (firewall).

Don't sweat getting the router.  It does a much nicer job of protecting you anyway.  Anymore I wouldn't hook anything up full time to the net without some kind of protection.

Yeah, I went for the Linksys in the end. Seemed to be a highly recommended choice.

As for bandwidth, I'm thinking of paying a little extra and doubling it - taking the connection up to 1 Mb/s. I'll see how things are when I have the network up and running, the router should arrive tommorrow. Cheers.

I share a DSL connect to 4 machines around the house. Very similar setup, I actually had the lan first then added the connect to get them all online.

There should be no problems, might have to call your isp a time or 2 to figure out the details but its really not that hard.

I've had steady flying while my wife surfs, my daughter downloads music and my little p133 testbed machine does seti@home sets.

Granted for TOD's I tend to ban everyone from the room but mostly for concentration not fear of connect woes.
