I'm new at AH and I still really haven't figured out how to range ships from a shore battery. Is it "lob and hope" or is there a key(s) that give you range info?

I think mostly it's lob and hope... if you can see a friendly plane near the CV, try and get him to watch your shots land and give you adjustments. It also helps if someone can tell you the direction it is travelling (towards, parallel, or away) to help adjust between shots.

Hitting any ship with a shore gun is about the hardest thing you can do. it moves so quickly too that any one hit may not lead to subsequent hits.

The idea in long-range anti-ship gunnery is to "bracket" your target.

You estimate range for your first shot (you just get better at this with experience). That shot will either fall long or short. If it falls short, adjust and fire again. Usually you over-adjust and your shot will fall long. Vice versa if your first shot was long. Now you've put one shot in front and one shot behind and you know your target is within those two ranges, thus you've got your target "bracketed". After that it's a matter of time and skill before you should hit. The idea is to make that first bracket as small as you can to be precise as possible.

The "secret" if there is one is to use your zoom key with the [] keys to first zoom the view in as close as possible to your target. After that the technique is basically to fire the first shot to far then the second to close and the third should be pretty close to target.

That said it still is not a very high percentage shot.

if you watch really close, you can tell if the splash from the round is behind or in front of the TG (assuming it is on line w/ the target)

Enter zoom mode and max zoom until you can see the CV very very clearly. Usually, when you try to aim in this zoom mode the CV will fall out of your sight.

So, after zooming, press to go to Pan view mode, and bring your view straight down so you can see the CV. You don't need the cross hairs, just use some other means of directional measure - for instance, the right end of the radio text buffer ends is almost exactly at the middle of the screen

After then, you bracket your shots. Usually, after some experience you get a "feel" of how far a target is away. In SBs I can usually land my first shot within 500 yard range of my target. After than you increase/decrease the range according to your need.

The best way is to work with a friend.

Make him your wingman so his dar dot is white.

Switch to "land mode"; and have him fly over the CV

When he tells you he's right ontop of the CV; click his dot on the map; the gun will traverse to target.

you're lucky if you can hit it twice, but i think the shells go for about half ton, so probably about 8

If CVs are travelling in a straight path, without adjusting course or someone fiddling it around, I can hit it consecutively. When usually CVs are travelling away or towards the SBs in a bout 30 degrees angle, you give about 0.2~0.3 range difference between each shots. You work your way from there.

I remember landing more than 13 consecutive shots on to the CV. It didn't go down. Finally, before the 15th shot was fired, someone with a 2000lbs load of bomb crashed into the CV, sinking it.
