That's normally what u get if there is a sound directX problem with onboard sound chips or sound card in AH, OR you have connected to the Internet and launched AH before your Internet connection has properly stabilized, and AH can't initiate the sound.
I get this if I connect, then launch AH immediately, bingo, get the error. Waiting a second or so after connecting (I have adsl) till the connection icon in my sys tray stops flashing before launching AH, then all works as normal.
I would make sure you have the latest drivers for sound, and re-install DirectX 8.1. Test DirectX sounds using the run command in the start menu by typing "dxdiag" in the run box and enter. Go to sounds part and test.
If after that it still causes problems, reduce your sound hardware acceleration a notch in the dxdiagnostics sound section (You will see a slider to reduce it there). That cures most of the problems on AH launch.
