HT, see your point.

Glad you agree on the enemy field landing.

Would it be possible to somehow differentiate between a ditch "inside" the field perimeter road (which means you did make it back to the friendly field) and a ditch away from the field?

While I understand the reward aspect of landing on the rwy, sometimes you're just lucky to get the thing down anywhere and walk away from it. That can take a little skill and luck as well.

Minor thing, this really doesn't bug me very much.

Because people will stop landing on the runways. Why bother when anywhere on the field will do?

As it is you see people take off and land inthe fields around base so they don't have to turn around at the refueling points.

As for people wanting a refueling point halfway down the runway, do a nroma approach and when you settle into the ground effect give it a bit of throttle and you'll end up 'fast taxiing' about 5' above the runway. Just close the throttle to land =)

This last trick was shown my by the instructor after a quick bout of aerobatics in a Cessna 152 at Southen Flying Club. The club was at the far end of the runway we were approaching (and the runway is big enough to handle a Valcan bomber, if they ever get it licenced). He 'floated' 3/4 of the way there about 3' off the runway =)

Bah, too complex.

The way it is now is fine IMHO.  It's simple, and everybody understands it.  If you enlarge the area, you just make it easier to land.  If you don't have to land on the runway, why have one?

No matter where you draw the line, someone is going to end up 5 feet short of it.

Besides, its not like a ditch gives the enemy credit for a kill or anything like that... its just a ditch.
