IRQ Confusion
« on: December 20, 2002, 08:50:28 PM »
I could probably figure this out, but to expedite, I'm asking here.

I have 5, count 'em, 5 devices sharing IRQ 11. My video card, sound card, NIC and 2 USB controllers. None will allow me to change manually nor does moving them in the slots change the IRQ. They go right back to 11 where ever they are seated.

How do I change them?

I'm experiencing the lost UDP session and lockup problem again. I thought I had this beat but apparently not. After more research into my system, I discovered this IRQ sharing crap and I would bet this is my whole stinkin' problem.

Oh, Windows 2000 OS.

Thanks in advance.

in windows 2000 you have to disable ACPI in order to be able to assign IRQ the normal way

Here is what Microsoft has to say on that topic:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The optimum method to change from an ACPI HAL to a Standard HAL is to
re-install Windows
  2000 as an upgrade:

1.Start Windows 2000 Setup as an upgrade.

2.To automatically disable ACPI support and allow Windows 2000 to
detect
automatically or manually change and install the correct
(Standard HAL) computer type
that your computer supports, use either of the following methods:

To Auto detect the computer type:

Press F7 when Setup generates the following informational
message:
Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or
RAID driver.

NOTE: You do not receive a visual indicator that auto
detection is taking place when you
press F7; proceed normally with setup until it is completed.

To Manually Select your computer type:

Press F5, and then manually choose the correct Standard
computer type by using the
            following list:

        i386 source File
                                   Computer Type
        *hal.dll
Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible
        *halapic.dll
                     MPS Uniprocessor PC
        *halapic.dll
                     MPS Multiprocessor PC
        *hal.dll
                     Standard PC
        *halborg.dll
                     SGI mp

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This information comes from
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q237/5/56.ASP.

I used this procedure when I first ran into the same ACPI issues a year
or so ago, and it solved the problem.  I reinstalled specifying the
standard PC HAL and now my IRQs stay where I put them.

Make sure you have an up-to-date "emergency repair diskette" before you
start this procedure.  If something goes wrong, you'll need the diskette
to return your system to a working status

good luck
