God, were they really that slow?

I find turning my tank quicker

The leading Tiger ace also rarely used the turret traverse, he pivoted his tank to face the enemy and used the turret traverse for fine aiming.

then again, turning your tank to face the enemy is a good thing, you always have a hull down posistion on your target

'Hull down' is when you have positioned yourself behind terrain so that your hull is masked by terrain from incoming fire, exposing only your turret. What you are describing is nothing more than turning your vehicle so that the front armor -- the strongest on the vehicle -- is facing incoming fire. But even that is wrong, because you don't want to be facing square on; you want to be facing at a slight angle.
