190 was called the butcher bird or Wurger (species of shrike)

spitfire IX i think got the nickname the Lady well at least Johnny johnson refered to it like that :)

wasnt the p40B the kittyhawk or something?

the ju88 ive never seen refered to as stuka. stuka was a derivative of sturzkamppfflugzeug(describes all dive bombers) and was used for the ju87.Schnellbomber was used however :)

me110 was the Zerstorer

Hiya,salem :)

Some IJA/IJN fighter pilots often give codename/nickname for US planes.
These codenames are ''kind of fish''.

forexample,
p-51 was called ''Katuobushi''.
Katuobushi is ''Smoked Bonito''
Its traditional Japanese@Preserved@food. It shape looks ''tear drop''style.

p-38 was called ''Mezashi'' or ''pero-hachi''.
Mezashi is traditional Japanese fish food also.
its mean ''a Skewer pierced through head of small Sardines.''
plz watch this pic.... http://www.rakuten.co.jp/btoc/img1015215805.jpeg
and, ''pero''is ''sound of easy eat'' in japanese.
''hachi''is ''eight''.
so,zero-fighter pilots called p-38''easy eat 8'' because they can shot them easyly.

heavy bomber with 4 engins called ''Kuzzira''.
Kuzzira is ''Whale''.

btw, u know Japanese movie monster''Gozzira''?
''Gozzira''mean King of animal of sea''Kuzzira'' and King of animal of gungle''Gorilla''. :D

sorry my poor English & transrations.
can u understand?;)

Foreign peoples often call japanese warplane ''a6m2'', ''Ki-~~'',''n1k2'' etc etc.

but, these number are not faimous nameing in japan.
These are ''Factory/production codename''.

IJN factory/production codename rule.
1st word is ''kind of plane''.
2nd word is ''Production number''.
3rd word is ''factory name''.
4th~5th word is ''modefied number''.

for example, ''A6m5b''
A is ''carrier fighter''.
6 is ''6th plan''
m is ''Mitubish''
5 is ''5th modefied''
b is ''type of little modefied'' Kou is a, otsu is b, hei is c, tei is d, bo is e.

for example, ''N1k2-J''
N is Floated-fighter (sea fighter)
1 is ''1st plan''
k is ''kawanishi''
2 is ''2nd modefied''
J is ''fighter for ground landing''

But, These are Factory codenames.
We -and many pilots at ww2 era- call them ''Type zero model 52 'Otsu' '',
and ''Shisen model21'' or ''Shiden-kai''.
Its Army/Navy's formal names & nicknames.

I know many intersting thing about IJA/IJN planes.
but I can not talk English very well.  plz excuse me.

ja, sturmbird is JaBo version, no? maybe you can call it sturmbird if you use it for strafing...
also i would like to note that 'dora' is the term for any 'D' model A/C, not just the 190...our 'stuka' is also a 'dora' & likewise 190A & Ju88A are both 'anton', etc

I think the name you guys are (repeatedly) stumbling over is “Sturmvogel”, seeing how “bird” isn’t a German word ;)

HanaG,

That is great stuff. I understand perfectly. Do you have anymore of those code names?

F6F, F4U, P-47 etc.?

Sounds like the Japanese name for the P-51 was very similar to the american name which was the flying spam can, more preserved meat.
