Shillelagh, flying with the DoW upped A1 with a mixture of SpitVs and HurriIIcs. The Spit Vs grabbed for high alt to meet the expected Fighter Sweep, while the Hurris stayed at medium alt to ensure no NOE raids snuck by.

You can almost set your watch to how early Euro fights pan out. But just because you know what's coming, doesn't mean you can effectively stop it. Our Spitfire's encountered hi 109s. There were elements of the MAW with us, and as the fight spiraled towards the deck, our Hurris flew in for support. Thanks to the different Icon ranges, I couldn't tell what the odds were, but it was a brutal fight, with 109s swooping in and about 1,000 people yelling "Check 6!" The radio was useless at that point, it was pure immersion. A maruading 109 knocked my rudder off, but other than that I got out unscathed. I don't have a kill count at this point, but we gave better than we got.

Unfortunately, we were all engaged, and the Hurris were too low to get up and take on the Ju-88s that came in . I'm not sure if anyone was able to get at them.

After rearming, I formed up with 2 other Hurricanes and went on a sweep north towards sicily. We tried to bait some 109s to follow us south into an ambush, but once the dots started showing up on thier 12, they wisely turned around.

I had a blast, and it's was nice to have ToD back.

Sigh - no sign of my 202 ?? ? ?

Was a fun night even though we did not do a very good job executing our Bomber Escort / Coverage.

Better luck next week for me !

For the record, my only evidence of the Ju-88s was circumstantial. I never actually saw an icon, but because of all the bombs going off, I was pretty confident they were around lol.

56th FG launched 8 Spit Mk V and grabbed north of Malta to CAP.  We flew around for a bit and mistakenly thought the MAWs were enemy.  Got the old adrenaline going until we saw their green icons appear.

Flew around some more, then there was a snafu with the arena settings and the dar bars came up, exposing where the axis numbers were.  We saw a huge red dar bar west of us and were obliged to head out that way, as if directed by ground controller (the dar bar was only visible for a minute).  There we encountered a large raid of Ju-88s with 109 escort, already engaged by F4Fs.

We engaged, and the game turned into a slideshow.  I passed a Ju88 after strafing him, ping ping and pilot wounded, but no other damage.  The 56th attacked buffs and shot down several of them before being forced to the deck by the 109 escort.  We gave them a good fight and I killed one 109 in there. After a few minutes my blackouts started getting frequent, so I bugged  to the nearest field, the CV.

Hitech skillfully coded the blackout algorithm to increase blackouts on final approach.  So after blacking out on final, I gunned the throttle and engaged auto climb to go around.  Of course, the game wasn't going to let me have my way so at this point, my view turned red, head exploded, and I died. :D

Jumped into Frenchy's plane at this point.  5 Spits of the 56th had made it out of the intial fight unscathed and were grabbing back toward Malta, getting low on fuel.  Pollock spotted a low Ju-88 formation and Ammo dispatched Frenchy and Reddog after them and took up high cover.  Just at that moment, several 109s came in and engaged them, and there was a second ugly furball, with the 109s killing 3 spits.  Frenchy and Leftf00t made it back to base safely.  I logged at that point and don't know if they went back up.

It was definitely one of those knock down drag out fights.  The axis planes were slightly fewer in number looking at the roster, but wherever we encountered them, they had numbers over my squad. :D  The 109Fs and 202s were well matched against the Spit Vs and Hurris.  Looks like this will be a fun TOD.

332nd put 17 109 F’s in the air. We did a sweep over Malta. At 20k we engaged many Spitfires that were above us. The fight took us all to the deck. Makarov9 my wing took some hits early on and was leaking coolant. He cleared my six and I tried too late to clear his. Then wklink also saved my butt, but that cost him his life. By now I was 100’ over the water with 6 Spits chasing me East. They gave up and I headed North, then North West and finally West where I caught up to Drill and some other buffs. I engaged several Spits at 12k and forced two to dive away. I also pounded one that was focused on a drill. He blew apart with debris pinging my aircraft.

I escorted them north and hooked up with starbird. We engaged three Hurricanes, but did not press the issue when we spotted many of their friends coming to help. Starbird and I landed A6 and refueled and took off to escort Drill again. There were many Spits and Hurrs and the buffs were forced away from their target. Finally we I headed back after being separated from starbird. On my way home a spit gave chase. He closed to 300 and pinged me without any telling damage. I dove and pulled away but he continued to pursue firing out to 800 yards. Finally he broke off about the time the CM called for hostilities to cease. I turned and gave chase to the spit. I closed to 400 yards and he never looked back.

300 yards

200 yards

100 yards

I sat on his six and formed on his right wing looking the AC over for damage. Figured the pilot was wounded. I pulled up right along side and gave a to (if I recall) paintMAW who had ran out of ammo and was heading home.  I winged over and headed north to home without firing a return shot.

Was a rough TOD. We lost 12 and only took down about 7.
