Game crashes
« on: January 09, 2003, 11:49:04 AM »
I'm trying to make a level bombing practice terrain and every time I load it into AH , it crashes the game and sends me back to desktop.
I followed Pokie's instructions (very nice write up btw, thanks Pokie) for first time users and it worked fine.
Now I'm trying to set up a field at 25K to practice level bombing on bases set at 0 alt.
Is this too high an alt?
Anyway, I have no object errors and the bitmap loads fine in the clipboard.
Any ideas on why this is causing the game to crash once I'm rolling down the runway?
    Thanks for any help!
Salute,
Cadman

Did you try to BUILD it again?
It may have not compiled properly?

I just tried your suggestion. I deleted the res file, went back to the editor, built the terrain again and it worked perfectly! I was able to fly for about 15 minutes, bomb and land.
Then I quit the game, went back in and it started crashing again.
I deleted the res file again, built the terrain once more but it keeps crashing the game this time. I'm not sure what's wrong. Other terrains work fine (none of them created by me of course ).
   Any other ideas?
Thanks a bunch.

The name of the map is: bombing-25k

The number of fields are: Bishop-3
                                        Knights-1
                                        Rooks-1

Somewhere I messed up.
I was supposed to have 1 Bishop, 1 Rook and 3 Knight fields.
The zones could be messed up. I set field 1 as zone1
fields 2,3,4  as zone 2 and field 5  as zone 3

I thought the zones dictated who owns the fields, but this
doesn't seem to be the case here. I might have to start over
and pay more attention to who owns what field.
Shouldn't each country have it's own zone?

In this case the Bishops own fields in 2 different zones

Thanks,
Cadman

The problem is the name of your terrain!!!

Rename it so that it is only 8 characters long.

For example..... try bomb-25k

This would means that you would need to rename the Main Folder bomb-25k
and all the other Files in that folder that started with bombing-25k would now be bomb-25k.

Once this is done start up the TE and build your bomb-25k.res file.

P.S  Note!

If you delete your bombing-25k.res from your C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High\terrains folder...
I would then recommend that you open your curterr.cfg file
( located in your C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High\settings folder ) with notepad and replace the bombing-25k with bomb-25k.

well, you've snuffed up on the name, what'll be whats wrong.

You see, AH's file system is like DOS, it can only read files that're 11 characters long in the 8.3 format, that means the that the file name can UP TO 8 characters long, and 3 characters after the '.'

Yours is too long, the file name is 11 characters long.

You'll have to rename it too, for example, bmbng25k

One problem however! You can't just rename the .res file, you have to manualy rename all the files, including the folder, making sure you don't accidentaly delete the extention.

As long as the 3 Headquarters are use as Zone 1, 2 and 3 I don't think that that Field "Bishops own fields in 2 different zones" will be a big deal.

Desert terrain has 12 Zones, 4 for each Country.
In this terrain..
Bishop have Zones 1 ( Master ), Zone 6, Zone 7 and Zone 8
Knights have Zones 2 ( Master ), Zone 10, Zone 11 and Zone 12
Rooks have Zones 3 ( Master ), Zone 4, Zone 5 and Zone 9

You could always just goto Settings / Fields Setup while in the TE and set the Field to the Country that you want.

THATS IT!!!  :)

File name was too long.
I changed all the file names to bomb-25k and it works perfectly!!
Tried it 4 times and not a bit of trouble!!

Hey, thanks for being around guys,
I was about to pull my hair out
(what's left up there anyway)

Big Salute,
