« on: January 07, 2003, 07:40:58 PM »
Its a tabloid newspaper called 'the mirror' and its generally full of the usual nonsense and drivel most newspapers seem to spout these days but I do think it was rather a funny headline!

Whether theres any thruth to it is another matter but you yanks should be aware this is why most people think Bush is after Iraq.

I SHELL not EXXONerate saddam hussein from blame. I will MOBILise our troops and JETs to Q8 and the persian GULF.I will BPrepared for TOTAL war. The message is AMOCOming to kick your ass, saddam'

with a lovely picture of bush in his US army marines jacket and below it says 'now you can guess why george w. bush is hellbent on a war against iraq'

clever little play on words dont you think ? :p

Hazed - I have the .JPG picture of that. My brother sent it a couple of months ago, so it's been around for a while.  I'd post it here, but have decided against posting things which might upset some of our friends.

Shell is a Dutch corporation and does business in the  USA in partnership(called "Motiva", which is also partly owned by Saudi Arabia and includes the old "Texaco" company )with Exxon, which now owns Mobil.

BP(Great Britain) now owns Amoco, which does business in the USA with Transmontaigne(French)which markets the BP/Amoco brand product at American-owned terminals and refineries.

All internationally owned and operated oil conglomerates, i.e., to the ignorant, anti-capitalist, anti-globalist,  anti-technology Luddites of the Socialist-Left:  "Evil Big Oil".

"Bush's War" for oil is also Saudi Arabia's, Great Britain's, France's, and Germany's,  it would seem.  Damn "Old World" War Mongers vs. Tin-Horn Dictators  are at it again..........

P.S.

If "ignorance is bliss" then it follows that Leftist-Socialists and American Liberal-Democrats must be deleriously happy.   But  that is obviously not the case.......

Just like people said in the 1st Gulf war..... we are after oil.... and just look at all that oil we got from the 1st gulf war.

The US has plenty of cheap oil now... why would we need to get Iraq's?

Maybe if we landed a man on the moon in the current climate, people would say we are only after oil.

Time will prove these people wrong IMO.

hehe - so do I. People are fond of saying that this forthcoming and inevitable conflict is all about oil. But if that was it, surely the US would have done its thing against Saddam in 1991 when it had the chance.

Just because there's plenty of cheap oil at the moment doesn't negate the fact that the oil is a factor. Iraqi oil is amongst the cheapest in the world to extract - in some parts of Iraq it literally seeps out the ground. Cheap to extract = higher profit margins. Exploiting Iraqi oil would also decrease dependancy on Saudi oil and could well be OPEC's death blow assuming that a pro-US puppet government á la Iran under the Shah could be put in place. No OPEC = lower costs for the oil co's and again, higher profit margins.

"hehe - so do I. People are fond of saying that this forthcoming and inevitable conflict is all about oil. But if that was it, surely the US would have done its thing against Saddam in 1991 when it had the chance."

Do you actually have any idea why Saddam invaded Kuwait in the 1st place? Because encouraged by the USA,  Kuwaiti over-production was driving the price of oil down at time when Iraq was nearly bankrupt after doing the west's dirty work fighting the mullahs of Tehran. That Iraq would attack was a foregone conclusion under the circumstances. Cue the bogus stories of babies ripped out of incubators in Kuwait City, and appeals to help return the gallant and freedom loving but equally undemocratic and repressive Kuwaitis turf out the Iraqi aggressor.

End result in 1991, a short term rise in oil prices makes a certain few even richer, Bush snr gets that old military-industrial pork a much needed post-cold-war boost and Saddam is disarmed and can never again threaten middle east oil supplies with the standing army the west had helped him build up over the previous 10 years. Also add the fact that due to the resulting sanctions precluding the sale of much oil from Iraq, the throroughly wholesome and unrepressive Saudi regime's reserves are now worth just that little bit more.

The us isn't "After" oil.

The whole world relies on oil to operate.  A very large percentage of that oil comes from the middle east.  Instability in the middle east hurts the flow of oil, and therefore is bad.  It has nothing to do with who's making the money off of it, simply that it needs to be available.

OPEC gets to screw the world on a daily basis.  The US is just out to make sure that they remain able to screw us, since the alternative(oil shortages) is worse.
