Hehehe.....sweet :D

We enjoyed a similar experience two or three years ago at Air Warrior.

Those who've flown AW will remember that we had host-controlled goons as well as player flown goons. The AI goons were the mechanism by which the "strat" system ferried supplies to repair damaged airfields and facilities. It was thus possible to prolong the agony of the enema by delaying regeneration by hunting and killing his goons flying in from rear areas.

Many a point potato discovered and exploited the tactic of camping at an enema supply field, and killing goons en masse. See, if a field somewhere needed something, the host would dispatch a goon. If it was killed, a minute or so later another would launch. So, if several fields or facilities were "porked" in forward areas, many goons would launch from the supply fields...and would keep doing so as fast as you vulched them...but I digress :)

Just as every Air Warrior had his/her "CPID", which would be displayed in front of their radio messages, or as *CPID* shot down over the radio whenever  he/she died, so did the AI goons. Their CPIDs followed a form, "z" followed by 4 digits, such as z0001, z0025, z3812, etc. Whenever someone somewhere was "goon vulching", everyone would know by way of the radio buffer looking like:

z0124 shot down
z0125 shot down
Shane: you guys are all tards
z0126 shot down
z1027 shot down
z1028 shot down
Shane: blah blah blah

But the goons never spoke....until the Night of the Living Goons!

See, a plot was hatched in the Bigweek newsgroup one day. Many folks there agreed to meet in the busiest melee arena, and change their CPIDs (you could do this in AW) to the z**** format. They then proceeded to invade the airspace and radio buffer of that arena by at first complaining about being shot at over Channel One, then ramping up the sillyness.

z1012: Hey, that hurt, goober!
z0098: Yeah, why'd ya shoot mu buddy?
z2115: We're all unarmed, yanno!
Shane: WTF, over? The goons are talking!
z3986: STFU Shane, you slobberdonkey

Many folkses who weren't "in the know" (most of the people in the arena weren't) were dumfounded, to say the least. Rumors and accusations were rampant - the evil company guys who all flew Full Realism (the prank was committed in the Relaxed Realism arena) had decided to ruin their fun by making the AI goons rebel, or some of the FR buttholes had hacked the system, etc etc etc. It was a real hoot, the film was a riot to watch :)

Gawd, mass pranks like this are glorious! Some evil brainiac needs to start plotting ;)

You got film of that saved? You can use Notepad to open AW film, and the text is easy to parse out.

LOL that reminds me of some fun I had once, editing the text buffer and CPID icons in an AW film....so it looked like DOSE, Mage, and Grizzly were all guilty of bomb-fragging friendlies :)

LOL...I got booted just as we launched, had to catch up with the pack and was too far behind for Cilk to bother with me. That many 'AI' goons in the air was a hoot!

Two years? My how time does seem to pass.

You know, I don't think the story of HOW their channel was compromised ever came out.

I was flying knit at the time with the 4^ stormo.  The MAW had just moved over a month or two beforehand, and they had moved en masse.  The first time I encountered them was in that second beta map (the one with the 10,000 ft. field in the middle).  I remember taking off from A1 in a B26 and heading SE.  Then behind me I see a whole squad of these _MAW guys rolling C-hawgs.  I spot a lone, low enemy p38 in one of the canyons they had there.  As I'm flying away, I watch as the entire squad dives on the six of this poor FTD.
5 minutes later, the kill is awarded to one of the MAW, and someone says on channel:
YEAH, MAW RULES!

As the weeks passed, they got a little more socialized, and they found out about the RW tuner (or HT included a RW tuner, I forget).  When they would show up, they'd say hi to each other on channel 2 (perhaps because they were a really big squad), and one of the more initiate would say, "Hey, FredMAW, get on 209".

They said this with enough frequency that somebody eventually took notice.
So, one night, with the original island terrain in effect, the MAW shows up in force and they're playing around A1.  One of them says on knit channel 2"Hey, JoeMAW, get on 209".
Some knight (whose name time has forgotten) sees this, and tells hblair.  But the assassins are rook, and after monitoring the transmissions, it's clear that they're up against bishops.  So hblair tells the FDBs, and next thing you know funked's telling the maw goon to loiter NW of his base where he's got the ostwind parked.

Now two years later we've all got a little bit of MAW in us.
MAW, you guys have come a long way.

they were using a 'public' RW channel, available to all countries

Hmm... Funked, eh?
You could be right.  Of course, the 308 was flying rook at the time.  I recall this, because my squad was knight (and euro-time zone), and I had to change countries to fly (in us time zone) with the 308.
So, unless funked has something to add, the identity of the "anonymous informant" remains a mystery.  Could it have been someone from the ranks of the MAW?

Wlfgng: yeah, channel 209 was public, but that the MAW were on 209 was not exactly a secret either.  It's much more likely that someone saw the channel 2 comms and compromised the information to hostile forces than someone just stumbling in on the push.

Hmmm... sounds like an episode of "History's mysteries."

Yeah Yeah Yeah

That was the funniest sh*t in the world.  I have to admit I laughed until I cried.  The guy that got me most was the guy who kept saying the goon is near.  Of course it never showed...LMAO.  I do remember logging a ton of kills at that base so not all was lost.  It was a learning experience and I guess the one event that put us on the map in AH.  I'm glad you all had a good laugh, we did too.
