problem with defrag
« on: January 12, 2003, 04:47:28 PM »
so the other day I was defrag ing my hard drives.  both stopped in the midle with a list on the report of fragmented files that couldn't be defragged.

I deleted these files (2) from the F: drive, then re-defragged, succesfully.

on my C: drive there where 3 listed (all of these where in temporary internet files), 2 I deleted, one I couldn't find. I re-ran defrag and it went farther but again stopped. listing only the 1 undeleted file.  I again looked for it but neither it or the final folder it is suposed to be in could be located.

so here is a copy of the report:

I'd run a disk repair before doing another defrag.

oh, I forgot to mention I'm running winXP.  scan disc is no longer in the accesorys menu.  does it work with xp?

I ran the disc clean up and defrag with all 'owner' or 'user' apps shut down in the task manager (except explorer)

I don't know what app works for XP... I use my SCSI app to do it prior to the OS loading.  Maybe Skuzzy could shed some light on this one.

XP has the scan utility, it in the administrative tools under disk management. You can also access it by right clicking on the drive you wish to scan in 'my computer' and selecting properties. There is a tools tab which accesses the defrag, scan disk, and generic backup utilities.

ok,  so I ran the chkdsk and everythings fine.  but it still stops on defrag saying some files could not be defraged.  it's the same file as in the report listed above.  I've looked for the file and even ran it through the search.  search can't find the file and says the final folder is not there either (same result I got searching manually).

it seems like maybe this file doesn't exist but is listed somewhere as being on the drive. (I don't know, really just guessing here)

anybody know how I can delete this file or record of it? or whatever trace of it is causing this problem
