Training New Players Question
« on: January 17, 2003, 10:36:52 AM »
I have been spending alot of time lately training new players i see in the Main Arena. (as my CO can attest because im never on squad VOX anymore LOL)
It just make's me feel bad when i see somone asking to be a gunner then randomly joining planes (because they know nothing else). or somone begging how to get VOX working. i feel i have to help these people out. i actualy enjoy it and have my "New Player Training Speech" down pat. it covers the clipboard, the hangar, DOT commands, auto pilots, and basic flight in AH.

My question is about the "Cadet" and "trainer" thing. since i have spent so much time doing this i thought i should make it worth my while(ie. the $10 credit to my AH account). the problem is the last three i have trained is they are not listed as "Cadets" when i goto the roster/training.

not that i am going to stop doing this training or anything ... but the time put in warrants a bit possibly :)

so how does this whole system work? do i need to "register" as a "trainer" or something? how do i get the "Cadets" im training into the "Cadet" list? will i be flooded with cadets (to the point i can't "Play") if i do this officially?

just curious about it and trying to help the newbies.:)

Ps. HTC ... the new pilots i have been working with the last 4 days are: 1010105, Mtnman, and Sturge.

<> and TY for the answers in advance.
I don't know what to put here yet.

I've never worked with the system either, but you could go into the TA and experiment with it.  Theres' plenty of new guys in there to try it out with. 1010 just joined our squad "GHOSTS" and allready sounds like an old hand. If you had a hand in that ,I'd say you'd be a welcome addition as a trainer.

Check out:

http://www.hitechcreations.com/ahhelp/training.html

It describes the training program in detail and how the $10 awards are decided.

There is an official AH trainer Group, I'm a member, who tries to also spend time in the TA helping people.  The group is fairly small but works hard to help new players.  I know that everyone appreciates the efforts that some people make to help new players out.

The "Trainer" box option, is on the bottom of the "roster."  It is a check box.  Anytime a new guy enters the arena, those with this selected are notifed, in private text.  This works in any arena.

I highly recommend keeping the trainer box clicked and helping the new folks.  This builds the community and provides a much better environment for the guys on their 2-week period.

One thing I've seen from doing this is, if the guy says no to the "do you want a trainer" message then you can't add him to the cadet list.  From some of the new guys I've worked with, they seemed to believe this would give them a "training airplane" which they didn't want to fly.

The training incentive thing works pretty good.  I was credit as much or more than the #1 ace last campaign made in the contest.  Remains to be seen if I can beat out the overall winner of the contest.

I did a tour as one of the initial trainers way back when...all in all it was a very positive experience (lot of FFA issues where a drag). I'd certainly encourage you to contact rip about the training program (think he's still in charge).
