Dicta Boelcke ... tips for success?
« on: January 22, 2003, 06:57:59 PM »
saw this on wings tonight....."Aces High" was the name of the film.

1. Try to secure advantages before attacking. If possible keep the sun behind you.

2. Always carry through an attack when you have started it.

3. Fire only at close range and only when your opponent is properly in your sights.

4. Always keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses.

5. In any form of attack it is essential to assail your opponent from behind.

6. If your opponent dives on you, do not try to evade his onslaught, but fly to meet it.

7. When over the enemy's lines never forget your own line of retreat.

8. For the Staffel: Attack on principle in groups of four or six. When the fight breaks up into a series of single combats, take care that several do not go for one opponent.

Oswald Boelcke came up with that flying Fokker Eindecker's against early 2 seaters.

The irony of it all is he forgot to mention, "9: Keep an eye on your wingmen at all times." as he would end up perishing in a collision with his wingman Erwin Bohme.

Richtofen also had his Air combat Operations manual, it's located in Appendix 2 of the book "Richtofen: Beyond the Legend of the Red Baron" by Peter Kilduf. Interesting stuff for squadron flying, training and attacking.

Boelcke died in an Albatros D-II which depended on the outer wing struts for rigidity. Something as simple as a parachute would have saved him and then Goering would be a never was. Well odds are he would have perished anyway. But your point that his dicta came about for far different planes is observant of you in my opinion. Hard and fast rules like always turning into a diving opponent doesnt always work. Still this is a very good place to start while learning acm I would think.

the sun part does work in AH

securing an advantages position does work

do not be deceived by oppponents moves does work...(ask Urchin)

always carry an attack does work(ask urchin again...he's very agressive....thats how he fly's)...be careful tho...urchin died being to agressive:D ...some of us can counter those moves

fire at close range is a must for most players in AH....or else you just spray an pray...exceptions...F4U...F6F ...pee51...38's nose mounted 50's

from behind...well in AH with all dem HO'rs...doesn't work...but the mindset of kill from the 6 position is always good

dives on you....1/2 1/2 i say...do not run but extend your opponent...do meet em(this means avoid HO...but can't always do that)....

line of retreat is very good...always have a way out

last....check your wingmans 6...always good.....ya don't need 5 guys chasin 1 bog.....happens alot in AH

so most of boelcke's dicta does work....

It's interesting to that both pilots died breaking their own 'dictas'.  Which just goes to show how valid their ideas were.

The thing you need to remember about these rules is the ammount of combat time the pilots had. Apply these rules against any newbie in the MA and your gonna get a kill 98% of the time.

The pilots these rules worked against didnt get a 2nd chance to learn by mistakes. I would think even experienced combat pilots would have a tough time at first in the MA.

Hmmm, imagine how I felt when I first subscribed... zero on-line flight sim experience, only BEEN in a plane twice (ordinary airline flights), all sorts of bad habits learned from boxed flightsims... and then going up against the best on-line pilots in the world, some of them with years of experience!

It must be a miracle that I can shoot anything down at all :)

The rules are nice, so is reading a lot about ACM and aerial combat, but it all pales into insignificance compared to the sheer experience of actual flying (or playing) in Aces High. The only thing that really makes you better is getting your bellybutton kicked and using you big monkeybrain to realize and analyze what went wrong and how you can do better next time. And in the meanwhile your brain will perfect all this little computerprograms to judge merges, lead, etc. exactly right.

I wish it worked better though, you can still see em.  But if they were to turn up the sun it would be more of a nusance probably (and maybe rough on the monitors as well?).

'Dikta Gonzo', written for AW, works better for AH:

1.  Thinking: Don't Leave Home Without It
2.  (Graphics) Speed Is Life
3.  Greed Kills
4.  Warps: The Great Equalizer
5.  A Three-On-One Is Twice Too Many
6.  "A Pilot Has To Know His Limitations."
7.  Altitude = Options
8.  "Fear Works"
9.  Decisions Make An Ace
10.  Instincts Save Lives

I've taken the liberty to post in bold text what others actually see or say in AH if you take his actions into the course of gameplay in AH:

1. Try to secure advantages before attacking. If possible keep the sun behind you.

Alt Monkey. Nuff said

2. Always carry through an attack when you have started it.
Except when in a P51 or LA7, then run like alittle girl

3. Fire only at close range and only when your opponent is properly in your sights.
Spray and pray until you run out of ammo or get a lucky ping in that takes a wing off

4. Always keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses.
SQUELCH 1

5. In any form of attack it is essential to assail your opponent from behind.
Just post your opinion of him on the AH BB.

6. If your opponent dives on you, do not try to evade his onslaught, but fly to meet it.
"HO MONKEY!"

7. When over the enemy's lines never forget your own line of retreat.
"ACK RUNNER!"

8. For the Staffel: Attack on principle in groups of four or six. When the fight breaks up into a series of single combats, take care that several do not go for one opponent.
'GANG BANGER!"
:D
