hehe It looked to me like they were using the classic technique of removing frames during punches to make it look as if they were thrown faster and harder.
For an absurdist example of that, watch the Robin Hood scene from Time Bandits.

He was on the Today Show Tuesday morning. They re-created some of his stunts with the cubby weather man.. kinda funny.
They compared him to the next Mr. T.
