Wreckage
« on: January 31, 2003, 03:14:15 AM »
I know this might be more eye-candy than anything, but i would like to see smoking, burnt out hulls of destroyed ground vehicles. If your killed, a wreck is left in your place. If you ditch a hit vehicle, a wreck is left in your place. (this is to prevent the spawn/ditch, spawn/ditch, spawn, now guess which one i am.) Ditching an untouched vehicle would just disappear. Maybe they only last a game hour or so. Would be cool to see where a mass gv battle took place. :D

Unfortunately after a large battle there'd be hundreds of wrecks lying around, which would most probably kill the fps.

not if you had a good computer.  Which you should have by then cause you are saving up for the 3q 2003 right?  I say dont let the guy with the pii266 determine what game we get to play.  When there are 200 trees on the ground they dont wreck your fps, Maybe they can start with something as simple as that and move on from there as you purchase a vid card with more than 8mb or ram.

How would that be any different than a porked large base? Also, maybe after 15 min, the hull stops smoking, but the hollowed out charred hulk remains. then after another 45 min, it disappears all together. Note game minutes, not actual.

I think they could do it if they used a simple generic 'picture' with no more game personality than a tree.  My computer hasnt stuttered near a large furball with a toasted base since I updated to a 800mhz amd and a geforce 3 ages ago.  Now the only thing that will disturb my frame rate are the 'Clouds from Tunisia'.  Which is more of a bug and only drags me down to 50fps.

erg even if you might not have the PII guys dictate your game, HTC most probably will.

They made the survey about the computing power of the customer base and I bet there are plenty of sorry-asses (pardon the language) that still try to struggle with the game @ PII speeds. Sad but true.

did you see the thread on system requirements?  The test system is supposed to be a  p3 900 with a gf2 ultra.  I think that should be reasonable.  They said that was the 'good game play' system, so those guys with the 266s now will definitely have to upgrade.

I also like the line about ah1 dying a quick and painless/immediate death on release of ah2.

Skuzzy said in arena yesterday that they were still figuring out what the minimum requirements will be.  Too early to freak out yet, I would expect some online surveys comign (unless they alreayd have hardware data on us).

just a question,

How much of a 'life' decision is it for the average game player to upgrade?  I am rather poor, being a grad student on a limited stipend, living in a very expensive city, but a 200 dollar upgrade is not that bad to me.

Hell my entire system only cost 500 dollars (spent slowly over 3 months to build it).

What about dead aircraft after the pilot has exited...
« Reply #9 on: January 31, 2003, 06:36:20 PM »
I have often wondered about that part. Not that it is frustrating to see a plane disappear once the pilot bails out but it is still something I would like to see. I know that in Fighter Ace (since version 2 till current 3.5) the aircraft are still visible once the pilot bails out. And if you are in a bomber then if possible all the crew of the aircraft will bail out prior to you making it out.

Anyway its just a thought and a comparison to current MMOG flight sims (games).

From a technical point of view keeping the plane model visible after bail until the plane crashes is no biggie. Keeping the ground cluttered with airplane and tank wrecks for undefined time is.

All these kind of effects offer the players yet another game provided form of DoS similar to mass goon drop. However I see them offering little if any gameplay improvement. If there was a big single soldier aspect in the game, I admit tank wrecks and such would be additional cover. For tank-to-tank battles not so much.

There are few problems.

1: many on screen would cause MAJOR lag, as well as remembering every single location a player crashed, especially when u think about it in the MA like 100,000 people crash a day!!
2: Object limit, I dunno bout the language they are using, but allmost every language has an object number limit, usuelly some crazy number like 832975820, but with as many bad (and good!) pilots in AH it could still go over, allso u must concider all the trees and other objects, I dunno how HTC does those, they may reuse same object numbers as I am doing in my game :) which is a possibility, but then the long code to calculate the distances, see what objects are free, etc. would prolly cause lag (thats prolly what they do with trees?) anyway, I'm sure HTC would'nt even have to think for 2 secs how to do this i'm more thinking out loud about my games LOL :D
But as with anything it'd prolly cause a lotta lag.

I like great graphics and all, but I believe gameplay should allways go before graphics (unlike most games today :( ).
But if they could do it lag free (or simi lag free) it would be GREAT!!!

Simple.  No one will be allowed to bail out in AH2.  Ever.  No exceptions.

I do recall HT stating (cant remember if it was a post or ingame) but he did say that he would like to eventually put in that after the player bails out the plane continues with out the pilot until it hits the ground.
