How about using real ranks, for what ever country your from. That would be real cool! Based on experience of course.

That doesn't sound impossible.

Character creation could be very detailed.

Dropdown menus ....

Allied or Axis?

Theater?

Country?

Branch?

Heck ... even

Fighter or bomber?

Include historical units that fought in each theater (or "other" if a player wishes to create or join their own fictional unit).

Filling in the blanks sounds like what AHII is all about.

Wouldn't it be cool if player's characters that excel in one way or another have memos, communiques or news articles posted about them on the AHII website? Maybe other clippings about large battles that impact the war?

Hmmm...I play a game called Civil War On-line (CWOL).
It's a PBEM, with software that maps locations and helps create the orders you mail in for your units.

Anyway, there are several website "newpapers" which try to emulate the era, with war news, personal verbal abuse across the lines and so forth. Announcements about awards (like my Southern Cross for getting my 1000 cavalry surrounded by 12,000 yankees

) with the requisite articles from the enemy detailing why you didn't deserve it and so on.

This could be done with AH2, but it would be much more difficult, I think. It would be hard to keep track of what is going on and stay up to date. However a short scenario like Niemen would be a good opportunity for a "practice" run. If anyone would like some links to see what they are doing with the newspapers, I can provide them.

Yeah that's exactly what we have in mind. It's going to be a little tricky because we're going to need a rank system that has an equal amount of steps regardless of what country and service you're in. Some countries had enlisted and warrant officers as pilots and that gives more available ranks than those who only used officers. There's probably going to have to be some historical compromises to keep things even. The more ranks we have, the better, as that gives people more opportunites for advancement.

If you guys want to come up with lists of ranks for the different countries and services, feel free to propose a rank system that you think fits the best.

Given the fact they're not all equal .... do they really have to be? After all, if immersion is the goal, players should be willing to accept certain details that are somewhat skewed. If it's more of a programming issue .... could not the occasional rank slot be left blank or perhaps be filled in with some other sort of "reward" that let's the player know they are progressing (a letter of commendation that states "promotion is in their future" or a low level award that doesn't fall within the list of medals already available for achievements in virtual combat)?

The other option would be that the countries that had enlisted flyers (both U.S. branches did) would not reflect that in the game and if a country has an additional officer rank or two, they would have to be pared out. And if players can also create a "tank commander" type of character, this may not be a preferable option. Unless, of course, it follows a different set of rules.
