movement of naval units?
« on: February 04, 2003, 02:28:17 PM »
Can we get rid 0f the crazy modeling of task force movements?

No one in his right mind would use CVs in a knife fight like we see in the main arena all the time.

If you want to model cruiser and destroyer engagements, that's great, but that is a very different kind of sea fighting than what BBs and CVs do.

I see this as a major waeakness in the current version of the game.

Im pretty tired of taking off, and getting shot down. I do it several times, think "What the hell is going on?" Then I jump into a PT boat, and there's the enemy fleet following my fleet!

Is AH going to change the AI modelling of task forces, or for that matter the composition of task forces?

I think this deserves attention.  Probably the one truely lame thing about AH is the idea of positioning a CV 20 miles off shore of a live enemy air base.

my guess is... likely not in the MA

In TOD... I can't see a reason for the players to have any control of the fleets at all... (cept maybe as gunners)

Good point, Skurj. At best, I can see maybe a dozen or so "reasonable" pre-set routes that someone could select. But if HT is going to make the rank structure reflect the actual authority it had ... then nobody will have the authority to make those changes but HT and company.

Individual ships, otoh, could be taken command of by lower ranking players (size of the ship dependant on rank of the character) and used for specific tasks. It can be set to return to the TF as soon as it's "released" but if it's trailing it may never catch up (until the fleet turns or such). But I've seen no hint of "ship careers" being considered, so this is all just theoretical.

 Eh ... it's fun to daydream. ;)
