Beet1e W2K has built-in support for MS sticks.  No drivers needed.

Wouldn't hurt to increase your system memory too.
256megs would be adequate.  If you have one stick, buy one
of 256 and replace the existing.  If you buy two sticks, install
them both.  Don't mix the new RAM with your old.

Also, update your DirectX from 8.0 to 8.01a.

And, get the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers and install them.

Still, your video card won't do textures all that well, and AH is full of them.  As above, a semi-decent vid card coupled with an
increase in RAM installed would do the trick.

Sure, but what about that part of the software that allows me to program the buttons etc.? Wouldn't I lose that with W2000 "generic" drivers?

In control panel when viewing the properties of the joystick, a page comes up.  One of the tabs on the page is 'Recorder'.
On this page you can create custom macros and keybindings.
