Knowing that Mariucci was the likely coach, several black coaches refused to interview with Millen for the job, but Jackson believes that is irrelevant.
“Would you interview for a job you already know is going to someone else?” Jackson said. “Would you allow yourself to be used by the Lions so they could get around the NFL policy? These men are not fools and shouldn’t be treated that way.”

Damned if you do damned if you dont... Nice to see Je$$e Jack$on is again fully commited to improving the lives of regular people..

I have been watching Matt Millon since he arrived here in Detroit.  The first thing he did when he arrived here with his crony-Marty MorningWig- was bench a black QB in favor of a unproven white QB journeymen with a checkered past.  Millon went on to stick with him even though he tied an NFL single game record for throwing interceptions.  He publicly trashed Herman Moore- a legend here in Detroit (black) and signed a White receiver that Brett Farve thought was a joke.  They not only signed him but gave him big $$$$$.   The inside word was that Millon was either a complete Moron or a Racist.  I think he’s both.  The players have no respect for him and call him Master-Matt.  I dislike Jackson but even conservative people here are starting to concede that maybe Matt should just leave.  Jackson has a valid point and should not be just dismissed.

another giant step backwards for the black man and towards racsim ....
when this batch of African American "leaders" (JJ, Sharpton, farakon, etc..) dies off from old age, maybe racism will die with them...

Appointed by Commissioner Paul Tagliabue on October 31, the committee is headed by Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney. Under recommendations of the committee, NFL team owners strongly agreed on the principle that any club seeking to hire a head coach will interview one or more minority applicants for the position.

Not Jesse's rule. It's the NFL's.

Brought on by the realization that in a game who's players are 65% black... 20% black coaches is something of a misrepresentation.  Especially given that there are very few old coaches left.

The front office is even worse... somewhere on the order of 5% or less.  Ownership is even worse... no non-white owners (though that may have changed since last summer).  They were offering a new franchise to any minority owner willing to buy in at a reasonable discount.  Unfortunately, their hunt almost resulted in them selling a franchise to a Mexico City resident because no minority bazillionare in the U.S. would even entertain the idea.

I wish the owners would start doing more than just deciding everyone else needs to consider more blacks for these positions and actually start hiring based on qualifications.  Then there wouldn't be the need for these rules and coalitions to ensure the rules are carried out.

As always... more disappointed in the need for the rules than in the rules themselves.
