Johnny Cash song Hurt
« on: February 06, 2003, 07:06:18 PM »
It was mentioned in a post a couple of weeks ago but I just saw the video and heard the song for the first time. It is a bit sad but an excellent song. It's sort of a confession.

When I was a little boy I used to imitate him  (born in 65).

Anyone else see the video? What do you think?

Love it.  I was never a big Johnny Cash fan (it's my dad's music, not mine), since Nine Inch Nails is a bit more my time (I'm 21).  I must say though, it's a great song, and Johnny Cash really added a lot to it by covering it.

I know some people mentioned some other Johnny Cash covers... soundgarden and a few others.  Anybody else know some?

Edit:  I don't know why, but the video really adds a lot to the song.  It doesn't look that profound on the surface, but for some reason it really reinforces the music.

It really tells a lot about his life. It also shows what real value in life really means. Possessions are fun but in reality they are nothing more than things. The song does not really mean that much without the video, and the understanding of his past. It's really more of a confession than a song.

Isnt it a Nine Inch Nails cover?
Kind of bizarre for an old school artist to sing a cover from such a band.
Kudos.

Pretty much every album he ever recorded is full of great covers.  If you want to hear him covering current artists then buy his current albums.  Any of the stuff he did for Def American.  American Recordings, Unchained, American 3, American 4.  The fact that he doesn't cover current "country" artists tells you what he thinks of the current crap coming out of Nashville.
Also check out the remastered Folsom prison and San Quentin concerts.  It's basically gangster rap 30 years early.

JOHNNY CASH rules.

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

You should do yourself a favor and pick up "American IV" if you're at all interested. It has some low points (I could do without his cover of "Bridge over Troubled water"... god I hate Fiona Apple) but all in all it's fantastic.

don't want no aggravation
When my train has left the station
If you're there or not, I may not even know
Have a round and remember
Things we did that weren't so tender
Let the train blow the whistle when I go

On my guitar sell tickets
So someone can finally pick it
And tell the girls down at the Ritz
I said hello
Tell the gossipers and liars
I will see them in the fire
Let the train blow the whistle when I go

(Chorus: )
Let her blow, let her blow
Long and loud and hard and happy
Let her blow
No regrets, all my debts will be paid
When I get laid
Let her blow, let her blow, let her blow

You'll be left without excuses
For the evils and abuses
Down to today from years and years ago
And have yourself another toke
From my basket full of smoke
And let the train blow the whistle when I go

Lord, I've never lived where churches grow
I loved creation better as it stood
That day you finished it so long ago
And looked upon your work and called it good
I know that others find you in the light
That sifted down through tinted window panes
And yet I seem to feel you near tonight
In this dim, quiet starlight on the plains
I thank you, Lord, that I'm placed so well
That you've made my freedom so complete
That I'm no slave to whistle, clock or bell
Nor weak eyed prisoner of Waller Street
Just let me live my life as I've begun
And give me work that's open to the sky
Make me a partner of the wind and sun
And I won't ask a life that's soft or high
Let me be easy on the man that's down
Let me be square and generous with all
I'm careless sometimes, Lord, when I'm in town
But never let them say I'm mean or small
Make me as big and open as the plains
And honest as the horse between my knees
Clean as a wind that blows behind the rains
Free as the hawk that circles down the breeze
Forgive me, Lord, if sometimes I forget
You know about the reasons that are hid
You understand the things that gall or fret
Well, you knew me better than my mother did
Just keep an eye on all that's done or said
And right me sometimes when I turn aside
And guide me on that long, dim trail ahead
That stretched upward toward the great divide

Oh, bury me not on the lone prairie
These words came low and mournfully
From the pallid lips of a youth who lay
On his dying bed at the close of day

Oh, bury me not and his voice failed there
But we took no heed to his dying prayer
In a shallow grave just six by three
We buried him there on the lone prairie.
