My Experiences with MSI 655 Max MB (SiS 655 Chipset)
« on: March 18, 2003, 02:37:16 PM »
A couple of weeks ago, I shared the pain in the bellybutton experience I had with the new ASUS motherboard with the Granite Bay chipset, and the crashing problem related to the ATI 9700 Pro.

So after two weeks of hell, I returned it and purchased the MSI 655 Max.  A motherboard with very similar features (Dual Channel Memory, Onboard peripherals, etc.).

So far the MSI has been flawless.  Very easy to setup and get running and quite stable.  The price was actually about $30 cheaper, and I got a small performance boost over the Intel chipset.

I haven't had any crashes so far, where with the ASUS, I crashed in many different programs on a regular basis.

So far, (two weeks of running the new MB) the MSI 655 Max gets a big thumbs up !

Ahhh,...good to hear Verm.  I thought you got the Asus Sis655 based motherboard.  MSI, eh?  Hmm.

I've always thought it was a good card Wlfgang :) I was just pissed that it crashed every 5 minutes.

Skuzzy, the Asus board was $40-$50 bucks more, not in stock anywhere, and the reviews of the 3 different 655 motherboards at Anandtech.com pretty much said they were the same feature wise.  And that the MSI was the cheapest and the best overclocker.  Plus the MSI, was the only 655 board that I could actually find in stock at the time I had to order a new one and send the old one back.

Overall I'm very happy with it. :)

I had one little incident where I had to reload a clean WinXP install, but that was my own fault for skipping a clean reinstall from the start.

Good to hear Verm.  I had mis-quoted to another player that I had thought you got the Asus Sis board, but was incorrect in that.  I believe he is reading the forum trying to decide on the same thing you were and I am.
Hope he catches this.
