Sound problem Bloom Skuzzy??
« on: February 08, 2003, 04:43:29 PM »
Ok here is a new question.

I have the card loaded and see no conflicts with the onboard sound anywhere. There are NO references to the onboard souns at all in the hardware section. The joystick is working well and I have no problems with AH. I load another game, Comannd and Conquor Renegade and I get instant sound stutters and onscreen hesitations. No modifications to the config of the game helps.
Anyone have any ideas??? PS the game worked fine until I changed mobo and chip. I have same brand board and similar chip to before. Both were a 1.4 gig AMD but the new one is a 1800 instead of a 1400.

Here are the system specs.

AMD Thoroughbred 1.4 gig 1800 chip
DFI AD&& Pro Rev B via chipset
512 megs DDR 266 RAM
SB 16 sound card
GE Force2 MX 400
win98
DX8.1b

I have dloaded and installed the latest mobo drivers and via 4 in one drivers. The SB card shows green in setup. I have disabled by jumpers the onboard sound according to the mobo booklet. NO conflicts noted. Vid card has latest Nvidia drivers. sigh HALP!!!!

New issue. I moved the sound card to another slot hoping that might have an effect. Now the system loses my joystick. I have to delete the MS gameport then reboot for the computer to recognise the stick is plugged in. Deleting the creative game port doesn't help. Same for disabling either port in the configuration. sigh....

Maverick...this really sounds like IRQ's being shared.  When you moved the sound card, it started sharing with the USB bus and thus problems occurred.
Make sure the sound card is not sharing an IRQ with another device.  That older card will not share interrupts with anything without causing problems.

Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Information

Then expand the Hardware list and select IRQ to see the complete list of IRQ's Windows knows about.

Skuzzy,

I checked on an IRQ conflict in the manner you suggested and found none. I did see that the PCI controller was there with the soundcard but it was also on every card I had including the DSL modem.

PS the SB is a PCI SB16 if that helps.

Boxboy.

I couldn't find ANY indication in the BIOS for the onboard sound. I rechecked the jumpers and the sound is definately off as far as the mobo is concerned. The Bios doesn't deterect it at all other than the SB card.

Anyone have any other ideas?????

I am assuming you have cranked down the hardware sound acceleration?

I have heard that some AMD motherboards have problems with SB boards.  Not sure which boards or if it is even true.  But something is plinking in my brain about it.

Sounds like either an IRQ issue or probably more likely Creative's drivers.  A SB 16 is pretty old now, and I doubt their drivers properly support Direct X 8.

You did say yourself it was just one game that had the problem.  You might check for patches for that game as well that claim to fix a sound bug.

Skuzzy, there was a bug with the Creative Soundblaster Live! Value's drivers and the VIA KT133A chipset (686b southbridge actually).  It was fixed in a later Creative and VIA driver revision.

Thanks bloom,.. knew something was banging around in my head about that, but could not recall it.

DX8 didn't change the sound interface much at all bloom.  MS has not touched the DXSound stuff much since DX5, I beleive.

They are moving/migrating (tryin to get devs to as well) to DXMusic for all sounds.  Talk about an interface abortion.  DXMusic is pretty ugly.
