Mission Ideas please
« on: February 13, 2003, 10:40:00 AM »
Heres my first one...
If there is only you on the server it will generate a "Mad Cat" ASW patrol. You must fly a 4 mile by 3 mile circuit in a PBY(subsititute goon) at an altitude of 100 ft for 6 hours..thats what pairs of PBYs did at gibraltar for months on end. The 100 ft was becuase they were using Magnetic Anomoly booms to find the subs. They started in January. Found their first sub at the end of Feburary and found 2 more by the end of july I think...fun stuff eh...
The great part about this kind of mission is that it can use existing aircraft types. Needs no oposition and will try the most ardent score potatos will to be a Gruppen Komodore.

1. We dont have magnetic anomoly booms
2. We dont have subs
3. Perhaps we put in B-17s instead, and look for enemy CVs or PTs...

?
thats the whole idea. You would never meet a sub. They almost never met a sub..they did race tracks at 100ft for 6 hours a day for 6 or 7 months. They only found 3 subs in all those 100s of hours.
we dont need subs..we dont need MAD booms. We dont even need the Catalina. Just a goon circling at 100ft for 6 hours.
0 dev effort by HTC. And a totaly realistic wartime mission for career points.

Hey yeah, 1 pt for every hour you spend under 150ft alt.  Really an idea which maybe realistic, but would be unused.

Perhaps recon missions... a mission generator selects a sector and requires the recon pilot to fly a particular plane to the sector specified and pass over any installations encountered at xx ft alt.

Recon is a good idea.  P51b was used for recon, as was P38.

Need cameras for recon, give us something to look at to see if we can spot the enemy troop concentration or movement.  That would be the G2. If spotted then a new mission to destroy or attack  could be available but only if spotted. Recon only get points for getting good pictures,

That's a peach honey.

Here's two beauties:

1) Ferrying aircraft to Greenland, then Ireland, then England.  That's right, you never drop an egg or fire a gun, you ferry bombers.

2)  Fly Cargo "over the hump."

hey, a third:

3)  Ace mechanic repairing GVs and aircraft.  In this exciting "real war" adventure, you can choose between aircraft and ground vehicle repair.  Guys might bleed out the bellybutton if we also gave them a coice of ship repair so we'll start with just the two choices for now and work up to that third choice.

LOL, Sak. Now if I see "let's add dress uniform inspections" or "why not sleeping in the barracks? Will snoring be modeled?" .........

Why do you expect an empty arena in the first place? I for one hope it won't go the same way down like the CT. Look at Il2 and WW2OL, where hundreds and thousands are paying and playing to get the war "simulated as realistic as a game can get and beyond". If AH2:ToD works out as announced and would beat the RPG elements which WW2OL and the Il2 IOW's are providing now you probably will find more players in this new arena/game than you ever thought you might see at one spot in AH. ;)

Ah I forgot the lunatics at WBs who made the WW2 Arena there succesfull and the few enjoying the HA... well bottom line is: if this new game with its kinda new sounding RPG gameplay come out it might drag in a whole lot of other players from other sims if it just is worked out the right way. So don't prepare for the worst case scenario just yet but put all efforts and ressources in making this sequel as succesfull as possible.

Well if the ToD will just work out half the way I hope it will I'll never dare to touch any of the above mentioned games again. C'mon HTC, I know you can do it.... :D

Who are you talking to? Didn't see a quote so I had to go through the entire (thankfully short) thread to find who said this. Nobody did. What I have seen is some people poking fun at the propensity some players have for making completely ludicrous suggestions "to enhance TOD".

But ... since you mention it ....

Maybe some will find the game more enjoyable if it consisted of endless hours of flying in formation with no encounters .... or .... sitting in a virtual room reading a virtual newspaper and listening to virtual music on the virtual victrola until they lose connection .... or .... climbing into a virtual cot, turning off the virtual lamp and watching their avatar virtually snore for a couple of hours (be it time compression or a short nap).

Many (dare I say most) won't. Even if it's all optional cutesy doo-dads (the victrola and sleeping examples) ... it's a waste of HTC's resources to explore such). So much for wanting to see TOD populated, eh? ;)

And as far as there still being a choice is concerned .... what choice will players have if TOD ends up being an extremely costly investment that fails and takes Classic with it? Hmmmmm .... ?

This is why input needs to take into account what is practical first. :)

Here you go Arlo (assuming you were speaking to me;) ). Wasn't even a long search since the thread started with it. :D

The quote above suggested that you guys seem to expect the ToD to end up like some clone of the CT. Don't get me wrong, I like the CT, but as player in the euro timeframe you're more frequently fighting acks in there than human beings. ;) Now all this mission suggestions for snoring avaters and endless submarine hunts is based on the idea the ToD will be often deserted. Well I hope it won't and think it won't if HTC would concentrate more on other things than backup plans to keep the fun for lonely score monkers. And if they do the RPG stuff right, it sure won't stay with some enjoying it since there ain't some but a lot playing WW2OL and waiting for exactly this mission-only based system HTC promised. Sorry if I stated that a bit cryptic, was trying to make it short cause I usually tend to write quite long postings.

Ahhh ... much much better. Yes .. I quoted you ...

Quotes and addressing who you're talkin' to helps. Thanks for using both this time. :D

And yes .... if too much is designed into the game to inhibit action and/or participation at the convenience of the client .... 95% of the online sim community will not necessarily lose interest. They won't have any to start with.

Thank you. :)

Flying race track circuits for 6 hours and finding nothing is not my idea of fun.

I work 8 hours a day - I fly AH to do something for fun - not live the game.

I hope  HiTech does not design a game which requires living it - dont' follow the way of EverQuest. some of us have lives.

This Sub patrol sounds pretty good.    It brings alot of realism to the game.   Sub patrols were common.  So where supply runs, and Air patrols with very little chance of Finding anything.     All of these would be great additions to TOD I believe.      However I think they should be AI run.

I would like to find some excitement.    I would like to have a mission mean something.   Even if it is just going to shoot down some AI transport planes bringing in supplies.      Let the AI do the boring stuff of war.   That way Flight sim Newbs like myself won't be so humiliated in the Air to Air.  :)
