Ridge to announce terrorism 'Ready Campaign'

Ridge urges Americans not to panic over heightened security alert at a Friday news conference.


WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. government has developed a "Ready Campaign" to advise families on what they can do to protect themselves against terrorism.

The program will include public service announcements that encourage families to have a communications plan so members can reach each other in an emergency; to make a supply kit with flashlights, batteries, water and other necessities; and to learn more about terrorism.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge was expected to unveil the program Wednesday in Cincinnati.

"The war on terrorism will be won by the professionals," Ridge told reporters on Friday. "But there are things that individual citizens and families can do to help protect themselves."

"We can't always predict, but we can always prepare," Ridge said.

Yeah. you're right.  No reason to be prepared.  Terrorism can't happen here.

Heres the key sentence, not just for Terrorism, but for any type of catastrophe:
"We can't always predict, but we can always prepare," [/i]

Yet, we have Darwin candidates like Weazel (who, I might add, would probably off themselves when faced with a crisis) who say things like this to people that are prepared for any catastrophe:

We're Americans and we're SOOOOOO scared!

Geez, we've become a nation of paranoid sniveling crybabys waiting for the shoe to drop.

ya, all the bottled water and plastic sheeting will do wonders when the suitcase Abomb goes off down the block..the point is, that when you buy into the engineered panic, you stop thinking and become sheep..scared, voting, sheep.

I don't understand what you're trying to say, Hawk. Survival is the very soul of your primitive brainstem.  

A terrorist with a nuke is as likely as Mt.Rainier blowing suddenly, or a tornado ripping apart your neighborhood.  You *might* be directly in the path, which, in your scenario seems stupid to be prepared...but what IF you're not? Do you want to be a survivor standing around with your pants down?  I don't.  I don't depend on ANYONE for anything except ME.

Oh, I completely agree with you Rip on being prepared.. hell all my pals think im nuts with all the guns and canned goods I have ready.

 I guess my point wasn't about being prepared for terrorism..but that I think when the gummint feeds us panic its not for our survival sake, but another way to keep us on edge and believing whatever they say. I think everyone should have a kit for the worst case. be it a natural disaster or worse.

Agreed. I think this Homeland security act was a debacle. Unnecessary IMO.  Tighten our borders, enforce the borders would have been sufficient, especially the Canadian borders (where the terrorists gained entry)

rip....I agree about the borders being more watched

but ya gotta understand....our boarder is the biggest in the world...its hard watchin it all....but I do hope that we achieve a certain level of security.

but what was great between our two countries is the fact that it was pretty easy going in and out....we let em come from here ...but don't forget...you let em pass thru 2.

you know as I do....they where a determined bunch of fellows....if they didn't come from here...they woulda used another point of entry....

my brother who is a truck driver...frequently crosses the boarder....talked to em the other day about it.....he doesn't like it....cause now they watch it alot more...our side just like yours....so thats a good point for security...but bad for business

Slo, by all means don't think I was pointing a finger at Canada...if anything, I was pointing it at our security at the border but then again, who would have expected 9/11? So, now that we know what to expect, it must be dealt with.  Most aspects of the Homeland security act are a waste of time.

as for security between US and Canada, when I cross the border at Blaine, I've found going INTO Canada much more difficult than returning to the US.
