New system ordered...counting the days
« on: February 20, 2003, 04:36:11 PM »
Yeehaw, company bonus got deposited today. Ordered a P4 2.8GHz, 512Mb, 19" monitor.  Video card's just a 64Mb GForce4 MX, but only because Dell didn't offer a 128Mb GForce.  I'll pick a 128MB card up at BestBuy next week, and put the 64Mb card in my old system (replacing 32Mb ATI POS).  Can't wait to see what frame rates higher than 30 fps look like in a furball.  Three to five business days to delivery.  Sorry for the bragging, but I've waited almost three years to get a new system.  Old system now goes to the kids, so I don't have to chase them off when I want to use it (which I can't in good onscience do if they're working on homework).

128MB is slower than the 64MB version... uses slower clocked RAM, so unless you use programs that require LOTS of video memory (I think mostly the latest First Person Shooters need that much onboard memory)... then the 128MB version is a waste of money.

Just be sure to by a non-MX GF card... they aren't very good at all, and if you can afford it I believe you can buy a ATI Radeon 9500Pro and turn it into a 9700Pro with a new set of drivers and some overclocking (I'm very sure it can be done, I'm just not sure what card you need to get to go to a 9700Pro).

The geforce MX series is nothing but a Geforce 2 with a few tweaks. The Geforce 4 will do quite well. You can OC any Nvidia card with Cooblits. What are the ns speeds on the 64 meg and 128 meg cards?
