Adopt a Sailor program
« on: February 21, 2003, 10:38:58 AM »
I was reading muckmaws post and don't want to hijack his thread in any way but I gotta ask about this.

I went to go read the list that he was talking about and they have a downloadable list...

first thing I noticed was this:

Quote

Task Force Southwest Asia would like to remind people about restrictions on items mailed to U.S. forces in the area. Items with religious symbols from any faith other than Islam aren't allowed, officials said.

anyone in the military care to help me to understand wtf is up with that?

Kanth it's probably got something to do with the rules of the country where they are based.  A lot of our "free" "allies" don't enjoy the religious freedom that we do.

You're right. They don't enjoy many of even the small freedoms that we do.

And altho I understand it's part of giving up your rights and being in service it still gets under my skin. :( especially right now with the whole islamic extremists thing..

That sucks, comfort packages are highly important to troops.
Especially stuff that they are used to being able to get in America that isn't availible where they are at.

The dozen or so guys (my service time predated mixed gender crews on my ship)  in the "God-squad" loved that stuff. Unfortunately they usually threw out the things we would have wanted, as being decadant, materialistic and sinfull, before we could trade with them.  I'm not even talking about porn.
