Full motion flight simulatars and BEER
« on: February 23, 2003, 09:13:21 AM »

The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field, Seattle had a unique beer festival that included music by several entainters, beer sampling and gourmet comestibles catered by McCormick and Schmick's.  Some of the beers we sampled listed below were "Stationed" all around the museum on 2 levels, with the catered foods at different areas that made the lines for waiting under 1 min. The "Red Barn" where "Plant 1" built the first Boeing aircraft was the only section of the Museum not open to the public for this event, but the main floors of the musuem were fully opened up with Beer stations all about.  Imagine sampling Goumet cheese next to an Spit IX or tasting a hoppy brew beneath the wing of an SR-71~!(Acutally, an A-12, but most folks recognize the SR-71 name)

I'm certain we sample all of them(yeah, right) and these were some of the brewerys that participated from all over the U.S., including several locals:

Alaskan Amber Ale(Alaskan Amber Ale and ESB)
Anchor Brewing Co.(Anchor Steam)
Bieres De Chimay(Chimay Premiere)
Big Sky Brewing Company(Moose Drool, Scape Goat)
Bridgeport Brewing Co (Pintale Copper Ale and IPA)
Deschutes Brewery(Black Butte Porter, Cinder Cone Red)
Diamond Knot Brewery(D.K. IPA)
Fish Brewing Co. (Fish Tale Organic IPA, Blind Pig)
Flying Dog Brewery( Flying Dog classic Pale Ale)
Hales Ales(Mongoose IPA, Irish sytle Nut brown)
Mac and Jacks Brewing Co(African Amber, Serengeta WHeat)
Mendocino Brewing Co.(Eye of hawk)
New Belgium Brewing Co.(Fat Tire)
Widmer(Hefeweizen, Blonde ale, Pale ale)
Pike Brewing(Pale Ale, Kilt Lifter)
Pyramid(their standard line up)
Redhook (Standard line up)
Rogue (Dead man Ale)
Sierra Nevada (Stand line up)
Snoqualmie falls Brewing co.(Copperhead Pale ale, Wildcat IPA)
Orchard Street Brewing(Porter and Pale)
Pacific Rim Brewing(Runway Ale, Alki Ale)

After what was the equivelent of "2 x 16oz beers" of sampling, the wife wanted to try out the new Full motion simulators loaded with what appears to be a Microsoft FS F-18A. Unbelieveable, this full motion simulator does every, upside down, full rolls, vertical dives and climbs!

After a quick briefing by a young gentlemen who had been working since 8am that morning, we were strapped in, and bars similiar to a roller coaster were drawn down over us...the lid was closed, and moments later we took to flight.  At first I didn't understand why they piped in fresh air right into your face, then after 2 min of flight when the sweat started trickling down my forehead I understood why~! It was strange seeing in my peripherial vision my wifes hair hanging up side down as I performed barrel rolls and loops. :)

4 min. later the flight was done. A little wobbly walking out of the simulator, but what an experience!  The graphics were okay, the Flight model left alot to be desired, but with full motion you tend to overlook these things. :)

It certainly was a grand event, with the Flight Museum with all its aircraft lit by spot lights as they hung from the ceilings, the "atmosphere" was something! Several types of Jazz music, individual entertainers moved the night into a seasoned festival.
The evening was capped off with fresh coffee and several varieties of pastries and cookies for all to absorb all the finest beers in the country !

Thanks 2Stoney, CMC Airboss for the heads up the Hops and Props event, along with the full motion sims...we had a hoot!~

Being a fan of weird beer and aircraft, all I can do is eat my heart out.

This would be a great event for one of those futuristic holo/sensory virtual things you keep seeing in scifi flicks.

Oh yeah, we kinda do that now eh? Pick yer favorite beer, your favorite ride and WEEE! Party till ya (almost) puke!

hehe sounds like fun Rip :)

back in 97 at the WB con in houston me and 4 others won a trip to nasa to fly the shuttle sim that the astronauts train on.  We drank a 1/2 bottle of tequilla on the way there :D  All of us were able to land it on the first try ;)  The one bit of bad news they gave us was "no barrel rolls" hehe, how did they know that's exactly what I wanted to do!

The motion on the shuttle sim isn't 360 in all axis.  Only vertical (on ur back in the seat) for lauch, then probably about 45 deg's in each direction durring flight, which was still enough to get the really being there sensation.  Being able to go inverted sounds like a blast!

Ex-RAF F4F Phanton Simulator

Check out that link. I was going to buy some Phantom simulator time (ex-RAF trainer) for my dad since the place is only a short drive from me, but at £235 per hour of stick time ($350?) I've changed my mind.

Glad you had a good time Rip. I agree that the graphics leave a lot to be desired, but the "full motion" makes up for it. Did you know you could can have "dogfight" capabilities with the other simulator? Also, in the future, they're going to load a bunch of other aircraft into the program. I think they said something like 80 additional aircraft might go into the program.
If you, or any others, are interested, we're having an auction gala this summer. We always need volunteers to help out and you get a meal, free shirt and I believe other perks. We always have a celebrity M.C. the event and it brings out all the $$$ people in the area. Two years ago Harrison Ford flew his DeHavilland Beaver in and this year they're trying to get a well known celebrity who, shall we say, flys his own planes and just completed an "around the world" qualification flight. He hasn't committed yet, so I don't want to reveal his name. Any way, if you want to volunteer, let me know.

;)

An addendum to my previous post. I had the young gentleman that runs the simulator download Aces High into the simulator off of my AH CD. Everything downloaded ok, but you could only go as far as picking a plane. It wouldn't launch, but the company that made the simulator's said they might be able to connect the two and make them fly. I'll let you know if that happens.

:)

Ripsnort, if you want to volunteer, or anyone else, call me at work. Here's the number.

206-768-7119 from 8am-5pm Pacific. Ask for Wilson(not Stony,lol).

:D

Heh Dowding. A local Falcon 4 squad (The 'Stray Dogs') got invited to one of our F-16 squads. They got to fly for several hours the F-16 simulator there.

Bro is a member of that squad and flew the sim. Said the game was very close, FM wise. Also said that the stick required considerable amount of force to give any aileron/elevator. Dinnae move much either, pressure operated (knew that).

Beats £235 for an old sim eh? :)
