Ping, there are many websites that compare the cost to ownership, here is one for example, read the article and click the link:

Thanx Rip.
The Subie would not be for offroading. I have a 1976 Mil 5/4 ton 4x4 Chev for that :).
Were moving to Rural and She will need a car for the bad weather in the winter on the back roads.
I Personally would vouch for the Jeeps 4.0 L engine as I used it for Snowplowing and I never had any serious problems with it. Im just not so sure as to Maintenance comparisons and the family comfort aspect.
We do appreciate all the input you guys are giving. Thanx.

FWIW I'm roughly NFL lineman sized and my Subie fits me great.  Only other car in that class that I can fit into properly is the VW Golf.  Headroom is the key.

when i lived in upstate ny for school i remember lookin at the parking lot in mid feb there were 3 or 4 american cars 9 volvos and 5 or 7 subaru 4 weel drive thingys several types. guess nothing else would start. no jeeps was about 40 below.

p.s. the subarus didnt have the scorch marks like the american cars where people had built fires under the engines to warm them either.

in college we had a ragmobile that was a subaru 4 weel drive station wagon. beaten without mercy for 2 years (was old when we got it) never once died was toyota like in durability. they sold it in perfect running condition for like 500 bucks . were amazed at the fact the got 500 (one door wouldent close ect ect ect)

i would get one in a min just for the painless 4 weel drive .

jeeo 4 weel drive aint painless. i have had 3 all sucked unless you consider working on cars fun .

perfect running condition as far as it started didnt miss and all the gears worked some consider working breaks to be part of this.

bailing wire holding the trunk and passenger door closed in no way effected the perfect running condition of the vehical.
