How to change IRQs
« on: March 01, 2003, 02:50:48 PM »
Any magic formula to reconfigure the IRQs of system components like audio card, video card and net devices. My W98SE keeps depressing me frustrating all and every of my attempts. I just freed IRQs 3, 2, 4 and 7 (coms, ptr and modem) but all keeps the same, video and audio sharing IRQ 11.

Is it good to set up PnP OS to yes at bios setup?

Generally you should set PNP to 'yes' if you use windows..

Probably the easyest way to move irq's is to change your soundcard two notches away from the position it is now if possible.

Two notches because parallel slots are usually shared and moving only one slot might give you the same irq.

looks like this board has 4 usb ports

first thing I'd do is disable two of them (one set), the ones using IRQ's 10 & 7 leaving the ones on IRQ 3 active. If you need more USB ports, pick up a powered USB hub for bout $30 at bestbuy/circuit city.

from what I've found your board shares the IRQ's this way:

Int A: AGP, Slot 1, Slot 5
Int B: Slot 2, Slot 6, Highpoint
Int C: Slot 3, LAN, Audio
Int D: Slot 4, USB

(could be wrong as the manual, if right one, only shows 5 slots)
which limits your options

not sure what "ENI 3060 SpeedStream (03) RFC 1577 Classical IP PVC Client " on IRQ 10 is, your ATA controller?

I guess you've disabled onboard sound and stuck in a SB card in slot 5. As you see from above, slot 5 shares with slot 1 and your AGP (video) card.

Move the SB card to slot 2 first then 3 or 4.

Same with your NIC card, gotta get it out of slot one as it shares with vid and whatever is in slot 5

I'd try to leave slot 1 and 5 clear, move the cards around to see what plays best with what

here's a link to the manual:
Manual

you can always disable hardware in control panel/system/device manager with check box if you are not using it, ie your firewire controller while playing AH ( I have mine disabled) ..

good luck

Thanks Eagler.
I'll try disabling USB2.0, and then moving the cards to different PCI slots.

Mandoble have you tried resetting your configuration data in bios? That should reassign IRQ's in bios. It is under PNP configuration in bios. I would leave PNP OS at no it works for me.

Nice detailed response Eagler.
With your information I started looking at how my Asus A7V333 shares IRqs.
I noted from my manual wich slots will always share.
Doing that I reorderd my cards and got this far.

IRQ 0   System timer   OK
IRQ 1   Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard   OK
IRQ 6   Standard floppy disk controller   OK
IRQ 8   System CMOS/real time clock   OK
IRQ 9   Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System   OK
IRQ 10   Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller   OK
IRQ 12   PS/2 Compatible Mouse   OK
IRQ 13   Numeric data processor   OK
IRQ 14   Primary IDE Channel   OK
IRQ 15   Secondary IDE Channel   OK
IRQ 16   RADEON 8500/RADEON 8500LE   OK
IRQ 16   VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller   OK
IRQ 17   Creative SB Live! series(WDM)   OK
IRQ 18   3Com 3CSOHO Fast Ethernet Adapter #2   OK
IRQ 19   VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller   OK
IRQ 21   VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller   OK
IRQ 21   VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller   OK

Still seems kind of silly to me that I have my radeon card sharing with a USB controler..but its way better then it was.

I dont know if this will improve my crash situation in AH. But my sound and network were on the same one before.
I user a cougar HOTAS so I need at least 2 USB spots available. I have a MS voice comander set up that uses USB as well. But I could disconect that.. As far as I know the Cougar doenst like to share USB so I dont really want to use my external powered hub...
But I might try it if I still have problems with AH crashing.
Thanks for the pointers.

glad to help

the first thing I try to do before I buy a MB is see how it shares IRQ's.

After disabling my firewire & com ports, my ASUS mb gives everything (NIC, sound, video, ATA100 controller, USB) their own IRQs in win98

http://www.soyousa.com/kb/kbdesc.php?id=48  Here is what I found on their website on which slots share with each other and the integrated periphials. The speedstream device is your ADSL card. It looks like with onboard sound disabled slot 4 would work for the audigy and move the ADSL card to 3 if you don't have raid.

Here is what shares according to their chart:

AGP, PCI 1/5 INT A
PCI 2 INT B
PCI 3 INT C
PCI 4 INT D
On-board RAID INT C
On-board Audio INT D
On-board LAN INT A
On-board USB 2.0  INT B/C

They use the same chart for the Black and the Platinum so some of the onboard devices may not pertain to your board.

Good luck

OK looking at my manual. I was able to spot the irq dependencies on my mother board. By re arranging my ethernet and Sound cards and then reinstalling my sound card I am able to add 20fps..(to 100) and to go for a few hours playing with no crash..
thanks for the pointers you guys...
