what makes a bad online sim
« on: August 06, 1999, 03:25:00 AM »
Simply put, death by computer. I see complaints on other boards about dying from otto, ackstars, thats just being killed by the computer. death by ack weenies, again computer.  Collisions at d3, computer. An argument could be made that even the 6 view complaint relates directly to a computer screwup.

The bottom line, as I see it, is that the people who fly online, as apposed to buying a box sim. Want to be killed by another human being not a machine. IMO, any efforts to reduce or eleminate computer deaths will be highly rewarded.

No! I dont want to be killed either by computer or human! I want to live and enjoy the best things life can offer! I'm too young to die!

After sortie I want to climb out of cocpit, to be greeted by my chief mechanic Hans with big grin on his face. I jump down from wing and tap my trusty Fw 190A-4 'rot zwei' on it's side and thank it for bringing me home yet again. Only one .303 hole in rudder reminds me of fierce dogfight over kanal.

I can hear how the BMW engine snaps and pops when it cools down on afternoon sun and smell the oil and petrol. Missing protection patches from MG 151/20s muzzles and painter working with rudder are familiar sight for me now. Iron Cross 1st class is only a few kills away. Hopefully Engländer can't rush anything better than Spitfeuer Mk.Vb's to service and happy times can continue forever.

I grab my staffels kubelwagen and my german shepherd Gunther and head to local french chateua to buy some wine for a evenings date with local girl called Yvette.

You will always need to have some AI to make any kind of gameplay. It would be cool if players could man the AAA and try to shoot you down, but even if they could, there would never be enough to man ALL the AAA guns or vehicles etc. You need the AI to fill the void. Otherwise you might as well make it  Fighter Duel with just dogfighting. To me, that just gets boring after a while.

In that online flight sim that the individual that started this company have some level of familiarity with.

When I mount the guns in the B-17 or B-25, I can't hit ANYTHING.

Its like a pixel resolution thing. or something.  I am always just a smigeon off of were I want to put the sites.  I know its now me aiming wildly.  I squeeze of a burst and walk the tracers onto the target.  But I can never quite get them to lock on solidly cause the stupid site wont go exactly where I am Pointing it.

ARRRRGGGGHHHHH.

Now if I can point the site accurately in this sim I don't have a problem with less than accurate "otto." but If the site isn't stable, then I may need "otto" to save me.
