The "Thing" on the bow Pugg is a quad 40mm mount in it's tub. The smaller tub elevated to the right in the picture is a gun director.

Alaska was classified as a Battlecruiser, but was more along the lines of a super-sized Baltimore class. Main guns were 12" 50 caliber, probably the best 12" gun ever built.
