How about this then. verifier threw up an error in "STTUB 201. SYS".

Guess where this reside? In the Cougar Bulk Input/ Bulk Output USB drivers! I'm starting to get a clue here. What to do now though! No sign of error in device manager, but the old cougar is causing the crashes I'll bet your bottom dollar.

Windows XP verification throws up following:

system verification error in sttub 201 sys (WDM Driver error 2OE STTUB 201.sys +1941 at EF4A0941)

This is the main USB driver for the Cougar. Have reinstalled cougar completely, thinking the file was corrupt. It is a cougar file because it is gone when you uninstall. However, very latest cougar drivers don't help. If I run "verifier" the message remains and things still lock up.

If there is a problem with controller inputs that could be causing lock ups. Right?

I have to eliminate this or end up like all the poor SOB's who reinstall their OS etc just to find the problem is still there!

If you tell me this is causing lockups I'll be a happy man.

Sounds to me like there may be a problem in your USB drivers, especially as reinstalling the Cougar software didn't change anything.  Can you reinstall the USB drivers from the CD that came with the Motherboard?  I'm no expert but that would be the next thing I'd try.

I'll try that. The only thing is it seems to be the cougar that installs that particular driver. I don't undersatnd the subject enough.!

OK while we're troubleshooting this one:

my Audigy shares IRQ 18 with NEC PCi to USB Enhanced Host Controller

Geforce3 shares 16 with NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller.

Is this or is this not a problem. It seems to be standard on XP and 2000?

Skuzzy?
